Problem Symptoms
CSCdj54192
If an interface on a High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI) 1 port (PA-H or H1T+) card goes down/down and the following error message appears, this bug may be responsible.
%MUSELIX-1-STOPFAIL: XXXX: Stop Failed at disable port (XXXX = the interface affected) %MUSELIX-1-STARTFAIL: XXXX: Start Failed at enable port MUESLIX-1-FAILURE_CAUSE: SerialX/X:
CSCdk15336
When an IPC slave (SRSP, Versatile Interface Processor (VIP), VIP-based linecard) is online inserted and removed (OIR) from the router, Cisco IOS releases 11.1CA, 11.1CC, 11.2, and 11.2P don't properly remove the corresponding IPC ports. This may lead to output_drops in show ipc stat and invalid ports in show ipc ports. The patch for CSCdk15336 correctly removes these ports.
CSCdk53496
In the Cisco IOS 11.1CA and 11.1CC versions of the changes for CSCdj87399, a packet buffer will be lost when processing more than 20 IPC messages in a row and suspending the IPC CBUS input process.
Background
Because of the software defects mentioned in the Problem Description section of this notice, Cisco has taken the extra step to integrate other resolved software defects into the 11.1(21)CC1 maintenance.
The following list shows software defects fixed in 11.1(21)CC1 compared to 11.1(21)CC (including the above defects listed in the Problem Description section).

Problem Symptoms |
|---|---|---|
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdj54192 (registered customers only) CSCdj54192: PA-H(H1T+) experience STOPFAIL/STARTFAIL due to PCI errors |
See Problem Symptoms. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdj62524 (registered customers only) CSCdj62524: crash in -ip static adjust. |
Router crashes in ip_static_adjust, typically in response to the clear ip route * command. There is no workaround. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk15336 (registered customers only) CSCdk15336: IPC_RSP_CBUS-3-NOBUF: NO More IPC memd buffers to transmit. |
See Problem Symptoms. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk53496 (registered customers only) CSCdk53496: Possible buffer loss in ipc_cbus_process(). |
See Problem Symptoms. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk53597 (registered customers only) CSCdk53597: OIR hang router with PC_RSP_CBUS-3-NOBUF and CBUS-3-MPASTAT. |
If flow export is configured on the router and OIR of a linecard occurs, the router will crash with the following error messages: %IPC_RSP_CBUS-3-NOBUF: No more system buffers to copy memd buffer %CBUS-3-MPASTAT: Out of buffers--losing status information for MPA on VIP card %IPC_RSP_CBUS-3-NOBUF: No more system buffers to copy memd buffer |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk54291 (registered customers only) CSCdk54291: Memory fragmentation problem. |
Under certain conditions, a router running lots of subinterfaces and distributed Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) may experience memory fragmentation problem due to excessive fibidb/fibhwidb download to linecards. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk54652 (registered customers only) CSCdk54652: DFIB: connected prefix not deleted when interface goes down. |
Connected host prefixes could stick around in the linecard as invalid entries even when the interface is shut down. This could happen if the interface down event was preceded by a full CEF download. A clear CEF linecard will fix this problem. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk27244 (registered customers only) CSCdk27244: ISIS: searching first-hop adjacency does not look at level. |
Routers running both level 1 and level 2 Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (ISIS) may forward traffic to neighbors running multilevel ISIS over links without regard to level. Specifically, level 2 traffic may be forwarded over level 1-only links. Similarly, level 1 traffic may be forwarded over level 2-only links. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk39377 (registered customers only) CSCdk39377: Packet not forwarding continues even after CEF is marked valid. |
Even if we mark the adjacent as up, we continue to send packets to other links. To recover from this, you have to use Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) for the host from the router. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk42051 (registered customers only) CSCdk42051: High overhead IPC error handling. |
The IPC code outputs error messages when resource allocation errors occur. This may cause yet more resource allocation errors, and clearly does not scale well. Instead, count errors, which are displayed in show ipc stat. |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk49025 (registered customers only) CSCdk49025: Corrupted IPC message on OIR causes FIB-4-FIBXDRLEN error. |
When a router is low on memory, some IPCs may get retransmitted with invalid Exernal Data Representation (XDR) length and type errors. The following error message may be seen after an OIR event: nf-7507-1# 00:02:51: %FIB-4-FIBXDRLEN: Invalid XDR length. Type/event /. XDR 65535, buffer 65535 |
|
11.1(21)CC2 |
CSCdk53727 (registered customers only) CSCdk53727: DCEF fr pvc counter code on rp is wrong and inefficient. |
An inefficiency, suspected of causing IPC buffer constraints, was discovered in the processing of FR PVC statistics. The fix for CSCdk53727 removes that inefficiency. FR PVC statistics functionality is now being tracked by: CSCdk30525: DCEF fr pvc packets counted on wrong output pvc(s) CSCdk50463: FR per-pvc input accounting not correct with DCEF |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk43920 (registered customers only) CSCdk43920: Command history release at login prompt. |
For further information, see the Field Notice: Cisco IOS Command History Release at Login Prompt page. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk35564 (registered customers only) CSCdk35564: Extended access list failure DFS switching out a legacy IP. |
For further information, see the Field Notice: Cisco IOS DFS Access List Leakage page. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk43862 (registered customers only) CSCdk43862: DFS/Multiple outbound ACL on sub-interfaces could use incorrect. |
For further information, see the Field Notice: Cisco IOS DFS Access List Leakage page. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk11206 (registered customers only) CSCdk11206: Cisco 7500 configured with HSRP crashed at bootup. |
When ten or more standby groups are configured before any IP addresses are configured, the router reloads. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk18176 (registered customers only) CSCdk18176: Bus error when bridging on ATM interface. |
After booting Cisco IOS 11.1(18.1)CA code with bridging enabled on the ATM interface (AIP), the Cisco 7513 router with Route Switch Processor 4 (RSP4) continuously reboots with a bus error. When bridging is removed from the ATM interface, the router stays up. It also causes the router at the other end of the PVC to reload with a software-forced crash. We also loaded Cisco IOS 11.1(18)CA and had the same problem. Bridging on ATM using Cisco IOS 11.1(14)CA works. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk27922 (registered customers only) CSCdk27922: ATM-lite RX errors (ignored) after peer reset. |
PA-A1 gets receive errors after the peer atm device reset command. Only occurs in Cisco IOS 11.1(19.1)CC or later images. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdj50021 (registered customers only) CSCdj50021: Route-map and filter-list cache busted, results in route leaking. |
If the inbound or outbound route-map has attribute (and/or ACL) matching, there is a very remote corner case that wrong policies will be applied to the received prefixes. This will result in occasional route leaking or denying. Similar effect can be seen in inbound and outbound as-path filter lists. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdj82421 (registered customers only) CSCdj82421: mroute-cache corruption in AIP. |
When mroute-cache is configured, mcast packets cannot go through a tunnel to a router and are being routed via LAN emulation (LANE). The problem was due to the ATM Interface Processor (AIP) ucode failed to pad LANE packets. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdj87399 (registered customers only) CSCdj87399: RSP2 crash at crashdump after enable debug arp. |
CPU-intensive tasks like OIR, config net, and debug commands that print a lot of output have provoked router crashes in some customer installations. It is believed that a high background CPU load can also provoke the crash. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdj94991: POSIP crash at vip_pak_to_host_inline. |
When running a Cisco IOS 11.1CA-based image, the VIP can reload with a software-forced reload resulting in a traceback pointing to vip_pak_to_host_inline. This has been seen with a VIP2-based Packet over SONET (POSIP), although it potentially can occur with other interfaces. The problem has only been seen on two occasions in the last three months. In both occasions, the Route Switch Processor (RSP) automatically recovered by doing a micro reload. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk02186 (registered customers only) CSCdk02186: Crash in rsp_ipfastswitch after interface flap, c.encaps=NULL. |
It was possible that when MultiChannel Interface Processors (MIP) flapped, among others, an old routing entry was referenced leading to a system crash. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk10762 (registered customers only) CSCdk10762: CT3IP T1 may not recover after a reboot. |
After a reboot or cBus complex restart, there is a small chance(*) that one or more T1s in a CT3IP won't come back up properly. There are a very specific set of symptoms for this failure:
(*) - the chance is about one in several thousand Once in this state, a microcode reload command is the only way out (or a router reload). All Cisco IOS versions that support CT3IP have recently been modified to include more details in the hardware version string displayed in the output of the show controller t3 command. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk13965 (registered customers only) CSCdk13965: CT3IP: Spurious Accesses in ct3_periodic(). |
If using a PA-CT3 with Cisco IOS 11.1(18)CC through 11.1(21)CC, spurious errors may be reported. The following may be viewed when entering the show alignment command:

11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk29300 (registered customers only) CSCdk29300: Process Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) prunes to unicast addresses on point-to-point interfaces. |
DVMRP prunes received over a point-to-point link other than a tunnel are silently ignored when they are sent to a unicast address. Workaround is to build a tunnel with the DVMRP neighbor. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk30189 (registered customers only) CSCdk30189: RSP2 crash at atm_getvc_deleted when enable/dis DWRED per VC. |
When a user tries to reconfigure an existing virtual circuit (VC), the code tries to delete the existing VC to recreate the new one. While doing so, if the driver fails to tear down the existing VC, the router will crash. In order to avoid such a crash, tear down an existing VC using the no atm pvc command, then recreate it. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk32520 (registered customers only) CSCdk32520: ip dvmrp metric should only inject directly connected routes. |
It was decided that the ip dvmrp metric <n> command should only inject directly connected routes (and set their metric to <n>), rather than injecting the entire unicast routing table, as it does now. This change occurred in the Cisco IOS 11.1(21)CC1 release. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk35200 (registered customers only) CSCdk35200: icmp redirect not working with CEF enabled. |
When operating with Cisco 11.1(20)CC through 11.1(21)CC, the following may occur: When CEF (ip route-cache CEF) or DCEF (ip route-cache distributed) switching is enabled, the router stops sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) redirects. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk35821 (registered customers only) CSCdk35821: spurious accesses in sh diag code. |
Memory for crash context is freed when a VIP is pulled, but an IF condition prevents it from being reallocated if late a card is inserted. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk39936 (registered customers only) CSCdk39936: Fast Ethernet needs to report correct line status. |
Fast Ethernet Channels (FEC) that use Fast Ethernet port adapters (PAs) in full duplex mode need this fix. CSCdk20683 caused this problem. Any release that has CSCdk20683, such as Cisco IOS releases 11.1(21)CA, 11.1(21)CC, or 12.0(0.17), will exhibit this problem where line states of FEC members keep toggling. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk40099 (registered customers only) CSCdk40099: VIP2 crashed at ct3sw_fastsend_inline() by changing T1 framing. |
CT3:VIP2-50 may crash when framing is changed back and forth between Extended Superframe (ESF) and Super Frame (SF). Changing the framing causes the interface to flap, which in turn causes the remote VIP to crash. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk41546 (registered customers only) CSCdk41546: PA-MC-T1 does not work in AMI and 56K speed. |
This bug prevents proper T1 operation using 56k bit speeds combined with alternate mark inversion (AMI) line coding on the PA-MC-T1. Bit 8 of each timeslot is set to 0 instead of 1 as is needed to support the one's density as required by T1. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk43485 (registered customers only) CSCdk43485: Complete cleanup of path information after detecting bad attribute. |
If received update has as-path loop and/or any other bad attribute (for example, a bad next hop) when running under neighbor soft-reconfiguration inbound, the clean copy of the paths were left around (received-only). This will bring back the denied path if the clear neighbor soft command was issued and might alter path selection. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk44597 (registered customers only) CSCdk44597: ATMLite: OAM loopback not working on PVC. |
The PA-A1 ATM adapter cannot transmit Operation, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) cells. There is no workaround. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk48525 (registered customers only) CSCdk48525: POET drops at low data rates when combined with a sub-rate POET. |
Packet-over-E3/T3 (POET) output drops at low data rates with two PAs in VIP2. The use of a sub-rate POET interface together with a full-rate POET on the same VIP, VIP2, or VIP2-50 will cause the full-rate POET to drop outbound packets. This occurs with an externally clocked sub-rate POET. There is no workaround except to move the sub-rate POET or clock the sub-rate POET at 44.726 Mbps. Also see CSCdj86266 for a similar problem with HSSI interfaces. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdj35146 (registered customers only) CSCdj35146: VIP crash info shows all zeros in registers content. |
During hardware errors, the VIP does not attempt to send a crashinfo file over to the RSP. With this fix, a crashinfo file will be created for more types of crashes including Reno, Nevada, and CyBus errors. However, VIP crashes at boot time will still fail to deliver a crashinfo file. |
|
11.1(21)CC1 |
CSCdk34967 (registered customers only) CSCdk34967: POSPA: interface should be administratively down when inserted with no cable. |
If a VIP2 with a new PA-POS is inserted (OIR) with no existing interface configuration in RAM, the PA-POS interface should stay adminstratively down when inserted with no cables. OR If replacing an existing PA-POS (OIR insertion with no cable attached), the interface is up and should be in down state. |
Workaround/Solution
All software defects mentioned have been resolved and integrated (or ported) into Cisco IOS 11.1(21)CC2, which is replacing the 11.1(21)CC1 and 11.1(21)CC images.
