Problem Description

During the initial operating system (OS) installation on an MCS-7815I-2.0-EVV1 server, the server IP address may not be assigned. Customers attempting to set the IP address manually may get a warning message that the IP address has already been assigned.

Background

The firmware revision on the motherboard used in the MCS-7815I-2.0-EVV1 server was changed slightly between the units used for development and the units manufactured for Cisco. Windows 2000 recognizes the new plug and play instance identity (ID) and installs a new network interface card (NIC). When the OS installation process sets the IP address information, it still sees the old NIC in the registry and assigns it to the incorrect device.

Problem Symptoms

The symptoms will vary if Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services are available for a subnet.

If DHCP services are not available on the network:

• Any access to network resources will fail

• CallManager subscriber installation will not be able to see the publisher.

• Phones and gateways will not be able to connect and register.

• Running ipconfig /all at the command prompt will display

  DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

  Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

If DHCP is available on the network:

• Phones and gateways will not be able to connect and register

• CallManager subscriber installation might not be able to see the publisher.

• Running ipconfig /all at the command prompt will display

  DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

  Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

Workaround/Solution

Re-install the OS selecting DHCP and then manually set the IP address.

Steps to re-install the OS:

1. Boot the server with the OS Installation Hardware Detection CD.

2. Select New Installation or Server Replacement

3. Continue through the installation process. Ensure that the DHCP option is enabled for the IP address and DNS/WINS settings.

4. Once the OS installation process finishes, manually set the IP address and DNS/WINS information

Steps to manually set the IP information:

1. Right click My Network Places

2. Click Properties

3. Right click Local Area Connection

4. Click Properties

5. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

6. Enter the IP address and DNS information

7. Use the Advanced button to access the fields to set the DNS suffix or WINS information

8. Click OK to close all the windows.

9. If prompted, click Yes to the message This connection has an empty primary WINS address. Do you want to continue

How To Upgrade Software

The update software can be found on the Software Center. If you have not previously filled out Cryptographic Export Licencing control form, you will need to complete this form by selecting the option for Apply for 3DES Cisco Cryptographic Software under export licensing controls. Once this form has been completed, authorization may take up to four hours.

When authorization has been granted, you can then download the required software by selecting the Download Cisco 3DES Cryptographic Software under export licensing controls option.
