Products Affected
Products Affected Comments WS-SVC-NAM1 - WS-SVC-NAM2 - NAM - 4.0
Problem Description
The products affected running NAM 4.0 software can lock up if an old BIOS (pre 4.0-Rel 6.0.9) is present. The BIOS must be upgraded before installing NAM 4.0 software is installed. The BIOS image is bundled with the maintenance image. An additional manual procedure is required to install the BIOS image. The new BIOS will take effect only after the NAM is rebooted following maintenance image installation.
Background
The BIOS sets the timing parameters for the DRAM. The timing settings in older BIOS versions were not precise and can lead to a lock up of the PC CPU when NAM 4.0 is running. The newer BIOS fixes this problem. The older BIOS does not affect NAMs running pre-NAM 4.0 software. NAM 4.0 places a higher load on the system than earlier software versions and thus triggers this problem.
Problem Symptoms
The NAM application locks up and becomes unresponsive shortly after boot-up when running NAM 4.0 software. The IOS image on the supervisor will detect the NAM not responding to "keep alive" messages and will shut down the NAM.
Workaround/Solution
Verify that the BIOS versions is "4.0-Rel 6.0.9" (using the NAM CLI "show version" command), before upgrading the NAM application image to 4.0.
If an older BIOS is present, install the latest NAM maintenance image (currently 2.1(5)), boot up the maintenance image and then upgrade the BIOS. Please refer to the NAM 4.0 release note and the maintenance image readme file for detailed steps.
