Problem Description
This issue affects only those boards listed in the preceding Serial numbers list.Due to a documentation error, an incorrect temperature sensing component has been used on affected OC-192 LR and OC-48 assemblies. See Serial Numbers list above.
In some cases, the temp sensor locks up at a given temperature and sends incorrect temperature information. The board may register a temperature that is either higher or lower than the actual temperature on the board. In order for the system to be adversely affected all boards in the system would have to experience this failure.
This is not traffic affecting, but can only be corrected by replacing the temperature sensing component through reworking the assembly.
Background
Given the random nature of this issue, it may never manifest itself in a given system. There have been a total of three failures realized, seen only in modules provided for trials and/or test environments.Problem Symptoms
Invalid temperature readings may cause incorrect notification for the affected port or module.Workaround/Solution
Cisco recommends a fix-on-fail strategy for this problem. As of approximately May 20, 2004 new products that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E078434, which will have a Revision of greater than B0 or deviation D073921 are guaranteed to be free of this problem. Refer to How to Identify Hardware Levels below for instructions on how to view the version and deviation of in-service product.
Service Logistics has known-good inventory at this time. The standard return materials authorization (RMA) process and delivery times are in effect.
Customers seeing this issue should request a replacement RMA of the above referenced products. Please ensure that any boards, for which replacement is sought, are listed by serial number on the Serial Numbers list included in this document. Only those boards listed which do not have deviation D073921 or ECO E078434, which will have a Revision of greater than B0, applied are candidates for replacement under this program.
Note: Products that fall within the serial number range listed above are not affected by this problem if they have deviation D073921 or ECO E078434 applied.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
Only those OC48LR, (15600-48L16LR1550(=) Rev -B0) and OC192LR, (15600-192L4LR1550(=) Rev -B0) modules with serial numbers listed on the preceding Serial Numbers list without the deviation or ECO E078434, which will have a Revision of greater than B0 applied, are affected.Hardware levels can be determined from within CTC by selecting the Shelf View Inventory tab. From this location the part number and serial number will be visible.
While only the versions of this module listed are possible candidates for this issue, there are two versions of acceptable replacements, one with and one without guide pins. Both versions can be used in all field chassis interchangeably.
Note: Products that fall within the Serial Numbers range listed above are not affected by this problem if they have deviation D073921, evidenced by the presence of a sticker with the Deviation number or ECO E078434, which will have a Revision of greater than B0 applied.
