Microsoft SQL Server |
All versions of SQL server, full SQL or SQL Server Desktop Engine. For example MSDE, and all Service Packs and Patches |
Problem Description
Note: This Field Notice is a legacy Latitude Field Notice that has been converted to the Cisco format so the information would remain available to their customers.
Many MeetingPlace gateway products, such as MeetingPlace Web, MeetingPlace for Outlook, require the presence of Microsoft SQL Server, the full version or the free version called MSDE to work.
When you install Microsoft SQL Server or any of the SQL Server service packs or patches, you may be prompted to set the database access methods. Typically, the choices are:
-
NT Authentication
-
Mixed Mode - SQL Authentication or NT Authentication
-
SQL Authentication
When prompted for database login method, you MUST select "SQL Authentication" (or at least the Mixed Mode, which includes SQL Authentication)
MeetingPlace gateways that use SQL server and that require access to SQL database will not be able to access the database if SQL Server is configured to use "NT Authentication".
Problem Symptoms
If SQL server is configured to use "NT Authentication" instead of "SQL Authentication", the MeetingPlace gateway will cease to work due to inability to access SQL database.
Workaround/Solution
WORKAROUND:
Reinstall program, service pack or patch, and selecting correctly the "SQL Authentication" option during the installation.
Alternatively, you may be able to change the authentication mode in the registry. Example below is for a full SQL Server 2000 installation.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\80\MSSQLLicenseInfo\MSSQL8.00\Mode Mode value: 0 = SQL Authentication 1 = NT Authentication 2 = Both SQL and NT Authentication allowed
SOLUTION:
None. This is an education and training issue. All Cisco Network Consulting Engineers and customers need to be informed to select the "SQL Authentication" option when installing Microsoft SQL server software.
