Problem Description
Cisco has discovered that the Cisco 6920 RateMux PowerPC card occasionally hangs, requiring manual intervention to recover. The 6920 RateMux continues to process MPEG video streams, but you can't provision service or monitor the unit.
Background
This problem effects PowerPC cards manufactured prior to June 5, 2000.
The problem is caused by signal cross-talk on the memory address latch lines. This causes the PowerPC card to access random locations in memory with unpredictable results.
Problem Symptoms
When the Power PC card encounters this problem, you will not be able to connect to the ethernet port to manage or provision the 6920RATEMUX. You must reset the Power PC Card in order to restore connectivity. MPEG video streams will still be processed by the DSP cards.
Workaround/Solution
There are two resolutions to this problem. Either of these solutions alone is sufficient to resolve the problem.
-
Install a version of PowerPC card software with the fix for DDTS CSCdr50016 (registered customers only) . This software fix changes the timing when the address lines are sampled, thereby avoiding the initial signal cross-talk that causes the problem.
-
Replace the PowerPC card by creating a return materials authorization (RMA).
