Product Bulletin No. 704

Cisco IOS™ Software Release 11.3 (1) Ordering Procedures and Platform Hardware Support

This product bulletin describes the procedures necessary to order Cisco's IOS Software Release 11.3(1). In addition, it documents the Cisco platform and hardware support, related feature sets offerings, and Minimum Memory requirements.

Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3 Overview:

  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3 is a Major Release with a limited life.

The content of this release includes:
  • All functionality included in Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2. (Refer to Cisco IOS Software Release

  • All Platform support introduced on the 11.2P Early Deployment release up through 11.2(7)P.

  • All Features planned for the 11.2F Early Deployment Release up through 11.2(7)F. (Refer to Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3 New Features Bulletin; Product Bulletin # 706.)

  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3 will receive regular maintenance like all other Major Releases. However, 11.3 will be a limited life release, with at least one year of regular maintenance. Since it is a limited life release, Cisco will not take 11.3 to the General Deployment (GD) milestone.

  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3 is recommended for specific environments in which the unique capabilities in 11.3 are required. Moreover, since 11.3 will not be supported for a full two years, it should only be used in environments in which it is acceptable to move to a newer Major Release for maintenance updates.

  • There are two FCS dates for Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(1):

    • Electronic transfer availability from CCO - 12/22/97

    • Media-based shipments - 12/29/97

    • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(1) software product orderability begins on 12/22/97.

Note Cisco strongly recommends that customers select and deploy "General Deployment" release versions of software for fundamental network infrastructure. A software release reaches the "General Deployment" ("GD") milestone when Cisco feels it is suitable for general deployment anywhere in customer networks where the features and functionality of the release are required. These contain less unknowns and are more time proven versions of software which can be deployed broadly across a production network. Software at FCS is focused on delivery of new features and has greater unknowns. As such, it should only be used for initial "point" use of new features. Any early release software should always be utilized in a test network before being fully deployed in a production network.

Memory Size Requirements:

Your system must have enough RAM and/or Flash to run 11.3(1). Many of the subset images will not fit on the Flash that was shipped with your box and still run. YOU CANNOT COMPRESS AND RUN A RUN-FROM-FLASH IMAGE.

Many of the 11.3 feature sets have greater memory requirements than the 11.2 feature sets. Review Table 7 carefully to ensure there is sufficient memory prior to upgrading a system to 11.3.

For Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3, changes have been made to streamline the feature packaging. The new suite has greater consistency across platforms. Four basic packages from 11.2 have been carried forward to 11.3: Cisco 2500, 3600, 4000, 4500, 7200 and 7500 series. These are the IP Routing, Desktop (IP/IPX/AppleTalk/DEC), Enterprise and Enterprise/APPN feature sets. In addition, key features have been identified that can be added to each of the basic packages via a "Plus" feature set. There are also mission-specific feature sets defined on a per-platform basis.

The following table outlines all Feature Sets, Platform Support and Minimum Memory Requirements
