Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3AA

Introduction

This product bulletin describes the process used to deliver Cisco IOS™ Software for the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server and the AS5300 Universal Access Server. This bulletin should be used in conjunction with Product Bulletin #537, Cisco IOS Software Release Process.

Summary

Cisco IOS software release 11.3AA is an Early Deployment (ED) release, which delivers support for the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access, the Cisco 7200 Series Router, the Cisco AS5300 Universal Access Server and the AS5200 Universal Access Server. 11.3AA is being offered for the following reasons:

• Early delivery of crucial IOS service provider features (please see below for list of features)
  
  
• Providing the same release/code base for AS5200, AS5300, and AS5800
  
  

The process to deliver 11.3AA is based on the Cisco IOS ED release process. Unique distinctions for 11.3AA are:

• 11.3AA is based on the 11.3 Major Release, and is directly parented from 11.3T.
  
  
• Except for the first release of 11.3AA, there is a one-to-one correspondence of maintenance releases between 11.3AA and 11.3T. The first release of 11.3AA is 11.3(2)AA. 11.3(1)AA was not released.
  
  

Release Process

Release 11.3AA is based on the 11.3 Major Release, and is parented directly from the 11.3T ED release. As maintenance is performed on release 11.3, it is synced to 11.3AA. For every maintenance release of 11.3, there is a maintenance release of 11.3AA, which contains all defect corrections on 11.3, in addition to maintenance or new functionality unique to 11.3AA.

As maintenance is performed on release 11.3, it is synced to 11.3T and 11.3AA. For every maintenance release of 11.3. there is a maintenance release of 11.3T and 11.3AA, which contains all defects corrections delivered on 11.3 and 11.3T, in addition to maintenance or new functionality unique to 11.3AA.

Figure 2 shows the relationship between 11.3, 11.3T and 11.3AA. As described in Product Bulletin #537, the numbering scheme explicitly describes the level of maintenance on 11.3, 11.3T and 11.3AA. For example, 11.3(2)AA includes all maintenance that has been performed on 11.3(2) and 11.3(2)T. It may also include additional maintenance or new functionality specific to 11.3AA.

Based on the unique needs of the Cisco AS5800 or Cisco 7200, there may be times when 11.3AA specific functionality or maintenance is required, but no additional maintenance is required from the 11.3T parent release. In these situations, a new maintenance release of 11.3AA will be created, but it will remain at the current maintenance level of 11.3T. These maintenance releases are clearly numbered to identify:

• the maintenance level of 11.3T to which they are synced
  
  
• revision level of 11.3AA since that last sync to 11.3T

Figure 3 shows an example in which the maintenance is required on 11.3(3)AA and is called 11.3(3)AA1. In this example, the number "1" is added to the release number to identify that this maintenance release is synced from 11.3(3)T, and that there are differences between this release and the previous maintenance release, 11.3(3)AA. Readme files are created to clearly identify what was integrated into each maintenance release of 11.3AA.

Life span

The expectation is that Cisco IOS Software 11.3AA will be sold until the end of calendar year 1998. Future Product Bulletins will be issued containing further information.

Cisco IOS Software 11.3AA is supported by the Cisco Systems Product Support Policy. Release Notes will exist on CCO for every maintenance release.

Memory Size

The AS5800 has two components, the Dial Shelf and the Router Shelf. The Dial Shelf contains sufficient memory for all current software and feature sets. Specifically:

• The DSC has 32MB on-board RAM and 8MB PCMCIA flash card
  
  
• The CE1/CT1 Trunk card has 32MB on-board RAM
  
  
• The Modem card has 16MB on-board RAM
  
  

The Router Shelf requires both Flash memory and DRAM. The memory requirements for the Router Shelf are:

• 16MB of Flash is required for the Router Shelf
  
  
• 64 MB DRAM required for up to 12 PRIs
  
  
• 128 MB DRAM required for more than 12 PRIs
  
  
• 128 MB DRAM is recommended for all installations.
  
  

The default memory configuration for the AS5300 is sufficient memory for all current software and feature sets. Specifically:

• 16 MB DRAM

Port and Service Adapters Supported

Product Number and File Name

For greater affordability at lower port counts, the Cisco IOS software for the AS5800 is licensed per port instead of per box. One Cisco IOS software license is required for every modem card or every T1 or E1 of ISDN-only that are put into service. In addition, a base IOS set is required which includes software, media, and documentation.
