Introduction
This document describes the function of each individual subcomponent of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) on the WebView server in the Cisco Intelligent Contact Management (ICM) environment.
Q. What role does each individual subcomponent of IIS play on the WebView server?
A. The WebView server is an ICM Admin Workstation (AW) that runs Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft IIS 5.0 with WebView installed. The WebView server can or can not also be an Historical Database Server (HDS).
This table lists the subcomponent name, default setting, and description of each individual subcomponent for IIS.
Subcomponent Default Setting Comment Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) server extension Disabled BITS is a background file transfer mechanism used by applications such as Windows Updates and Automatic Updates. Common Files Enabled On a dedicated Web server, these files are required by IIS and must always be enabled. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service Disabled Allows the Web server to provide FTP services. FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions Disabled Provides FrontPage support that allows you to administer and publish Web sites. IIS Snap-In (IIS Manager) Enabled Administrative interface for IIS. NNTP Service Disabled Distributes, queries, retrieves, and posts Usenet news articles on the Internet. SMTP Service Disabled Supports the transfer of electronic mail. Visual InterDev Rapid Application Development (RAD) Remote Deployment Support Disabled Visual Interdev RAD Remote Deployment Support enables the remote deployment of applications on the Web server. World Wide Web (WWW) Service Enabled Provides Internet services, such as static and dynamic content, to clients.
The WebView server requires at least the Common Files and the WWW Service. These two subcomponents are the minimum requirements for the WebView server. It is also important for serviceability and general use that IIS Snap-In (IIS Manager) is installed. This is the Graphic User Interface (GUI) configuration tool for the WebView server. Without it, the user has no way to view or edit the configuration of the WebView server. The WebView server does not need the FrontPage extensions or the Visual Interdev RAD Remote Deployment Support. However, the other components may need it.
The procedure you use in order to verify if a specific IIS subcomponent is disabled or not in IIS 5.0 and IIS 5.1 is described in these steps:
- Open Control Panel and select Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click Administrative Tools.
- Double-click Computer Management.
- Expand Services and Applications.
- Select Services.
- Scroll through the Services in order to verify if the service is disabled or not.
