High Performance IP Service Delivery for Service Provider Intra-POP Trunking, IP Server Colocation, and Metropolitan Area Networking

The rapid growth of the Internet and Internet-enabled applications has led to a rapid increase in the scale and scope of the bandwidth required in service provider networks. Gigabit Ethernet has emerged as a crucial technology for enabling high-speed, low-cost network connectivity in the service provider's network for both inter-POP and intra-POP traffic. However, in addition to the scalable bandwidth connectivity provided by Gigabit Ethernet, the Service Provider's network also needs to perform high-touch IP services that enable and enforce tiered levels of provisioned bandwidth to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. Network services such as quality of service (QoS), security, traffic shaping, and traffic accounting have become mandatory requirements that must be integrated with high-speed Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to deliver the network capabilities necessary to ensure the Service Providers success.

To meet these requirements, Cisco Systems now offers a four-port Gigabit Ethernet Optical Services Module (OSM) for the 7600 Series or Catalyst 6500 Series Switches to enable IP service delivery in service provider networks. This new module uniquely allows service providers to increase network bandwidth and performance while offering a wide range of IP services. Service providers can deploy this solution in various tiers of a network architecture, allowing network performance and IP service delivery to scale linearly along with customer base growth. Furthermore, the IP services allow for peerless customer intimacy, with services such as QoS, security, traffic shaping, and billing offered not only on a per-customer basis. And the services scale for simultaneous IP service application to thousands of individual customers.

The Cisco 7600 is a high performance router which evolves from a specific set of Catalyst 6500 Family foundation elements combined with new high speed WAN modules, and is specifically intended for service provider networks. Each Cisco 7600 provides a NEBS-3 compliant chassis. The Cisco 7600 route processing and forwarding is a fully redundant configuration with the ability to route using such core protocols as BGP4, IS-IS, and OSPF, as well as support for QoS and packet filtering with line rate performance. The Cisco 7600 also includes a 256 Gbps switch fabric enabling high aggregate throughput. The Cisco 7600 can be configured with Optical Services Modules and any combination of traditional Catalyst 6000 family interfaces, including the FlexWAN module, which provides for outstanding scalability, with WAN interfaces from DS0 through 0C48/STM-16 and LAN interfaces from 10Mbps Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet.
