Introduction
The Content Switch Module (CSM) is supported in both Hybrid and Native mode for the Catalyst switch. When run with Hybrid OS on the Catalyst, the CSM cannot be upgraded using an external TFTP server. The only way to upgrade the CSM is to use the MSFC's Bootflash.
This document provides information to upgrade a CSM in Hybrid mode.
Prerequisites
Requirements
Before attempting this configuration, ensure that you meet these requirements:
-
Refer to the CSM Release Notes. The upgrade procedure in the current release notes (as of March 1, 2004) are for Native IOS, not Hybrid.
Components Used
The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:
-
Supervisor 1A with MSFC and Policy Feature Card (PFC)
-
Supervisor 2 with MSFC2
-
Supervisor 720
-
CSM version 2.7 or 3.1.2 or higher for Hybrid support
-
CatOS 7.5
-
Cisco IOSĀ® 12.1(13)E3
-
TFTP server
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Main Task
Upgrading the CSM in Hybrid mode must be done from the MSFC's Bootflash. There must be enough available space on the Bootflash to accommodate the CSM image. The image can be downloaded from the Cisco Cat 6000 Other Intelligent Module SW ( registered customers only) Downloads page.
Task
In this section, you are presented with the information to configure the features described in this document.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Complete these steps:
-
Check the images currently stored on the MSFC to determine whether you have enough room for the CSM image.
Router#dir bootflash: Directory of bootflash:/ 1 -rw- 14862928 Feb 15 2004 21:50:38 +00:00 c6msfc2-jo3sv-mz.121-20.E2 15204352 bytes total (341296 bytes free)
-
If necessary, delete the file by issuing the delete command. Issue the squeeze command to permanently erase files tagged as "deleted" to make the space available for the new image.
Router#delete bootflash:c6msfc2-jo3sv-mz.121-20.E2 Delete filename [c6msfc2-jo3sv-mz.121-20.E2]? Delete bootflash:c6msfc2-jo3sv-mz.121-20.E2? [confirm] Router#squeeze bootflash: All deleted files will be removed. Continue? [confirm] Squeeze operation may take a while. Continue? [confirm] Squeeze of bootflash complete
-
Copy the image from a TFTP server to the Bootflash.
Router#copy tftp: bootflash: Address or name of remote host []? 161.44.77.127 Source filename []? c6slb-apc.3-1-3.bin Destination filename [c6slb-apc.3-1-3.bin]? Accessing tftp://161.44.77.127/c6slb-apc.3-1-3.bin... Loading c6slb-apc.3-1-3.bin from 161.44.77.127 (via Vlan178): !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! [OK - 5025428 bytes] 5025428 bytes copied in 46.936 secs (107070 bytes/sec)
-
Set up the MSFC's TFTP server to point to the image.
Router(config)#tftp-server bootflash:c6slb-apc.3-1-3.bin
-
Session to the CSM and perform the upgrade.
Console> (enable) session 5 !--- 5 is the physical slot that the CSM is installed in. CSM> upgrade slot0: c6slb-apc.3-1-3.bin
Note: upgrade slot0: on the CSM may seem misleading as it basically means to upgrade using the MSFC as your TFTP server (not really from slot0:).

-
Put any needed images deleted in Step 2 back onto the MSFC.
-
Power cycle the CSM or reboot the Catalyst switch.
