Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series SSL and Content
Switching Module Bundle

For customers requiring secure content networking solutions with intelligent Web switching, a new bundle consisting of the Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Content Switching Module (CSM) is now available (Figures 1 and 2). The bundle not only provides transactional security at much lower cost but also enables deployment of content networking services, improving the overall user experience while providing security for Web-based applications. The bundle provides a single part number for both Cisco SSL and CSM modules, allowing customers to easily order a proven, secure, Web switching solution for the Catalyst 6500 Series switches.

The Cisco Content Switching Module and Secure Socket Layer Switching Module offer a high performance, integrated load balancing, and Web security solution that takes advantage of the rich Layer 2-3 features of Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series. This gives customers the flexibility of enabling any/all ports for content switching, providing scalability with investment protection for the Catalyst 6500 Series.

Some of the key benefits of the bundle include:

  • As a virtue of being integrated, any port on a Cisco Catalyst switch could be enabled for secure content load balancing while offloading all encryption and decryption of content to SSL module. This is possible in the same chassis or across different chassis. There is a wide range of interfaces to choose from, ranging from DS0 to OC-48 to Gigabit Ethernet.

  • SSL session "stickiness" is maintained even during renegotiation for SSL sessions as a result of Cisco CSM optimization rendered for the Cisco SSL module for the Catalyst 6500 Series.

    • The selected Cisco SSL Module and the client use SSL session IDs for all the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections that make up that flow. The Cisco CSM also uses a portion of that SSL session ID to stick the selected SSL service module to that client. If a client requests a new SSL session ID from the SSL service module, the Cisco CSM is able to keep the client and the selected SSL service module "stuck" together.

  • This bundle offers the highest performance of any secure content switching solution available in the market today. The Cisco CSM can establish up to 165,000 connections per second while maintaining one million concurrent connections. The Cisco SSL Module can establish up to 3000 new connections per second while maintaining almost 60,000 simultaneous connections. The SSL Module can support up to 300 MB of bulk encryption.

  • SSL modules in the chassis can be scaled to provide higher performance and higher throughput with the help of Cisco CSM. Multiple SSL modules can be load balanced by the CSM, providing high availability and scalability.

  • The bundle offers ease of management by using the same management platform (the CiscoWorks Hosting Solutions Engine) for both the CSM and SSL module.

  • The bundle, when coupled with other services offered in the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, provides a complete data-center solution for security, content networking, and switching needs for both enterprises and service providers.

  • The bundle offers the adaptability and flexibility of many deployment topologies as it can be integrated into any of the Catalyst chassis ranging from 3-slot to 13-slots chassis, depending upon customer needs and traffic requirements.

Network Management

The SSL and CSM bundle can be managed using the CiscoWorks Hosting Solution Engine (HSE). The CiscoWorks HSE is a content services management appliance that enables comprehensive Layer 2-7 network monitoring, content services activation, and customized views and reports for network, server, and application administrators. When used with the bundle, the HSE provides customers with proactive Layer 4-7 e-business service monitoring—ensuring effective delivery of online services and efficient operations of an online site.

In addition, the CiscoWorks HSE enables site monitoring, customized views and reporting, and content services activation while offering autonomous content services management to individual business groups via a user role and domain-based access model.

Ordering Information

The bundles will be orderable in November 2002 with volume shipment expected December 2002. Table 1 provides ordering information.
