The Versatile Interface Processor (VIP) models VIP2-10* and VIP2-15, and Fast Ethernet Interface Processor models CX-FEIP2-2TX and CX-FEIP2-2FX require additional memory when used with Cisco IOS® software Version 12.0 and higher. These products currently have 8 MB of DRAM (program memory). This has proven to be insufficient to operate with all versions of Cisco IOS Version 12.0 and higher. Note that these products operate properly in all Cisco IOS releases prior to Cisco IOS Release 12.0 including 11.1, 11.2, and 11.3. No memory upgrade is required for those releases.
Therefore, in order to run Cisco IOS Version 12 and higher, Cisco Systems announces a memory upgrade kit for the above mentioned products. This memory upgrade kit increases the total program memory to 16 MB.
In addition, those products still available for purchase, specifically the VIP2-15, will have program memory raised to 16 MB as default effective May 17, 1999.
This upgrade does not apply to the following Fast Ethernet Interface processors:
CX-FEIP-2TX, CX-FEIP-2FX, FEIP2-DSW-2TX, and FEIP2-DSW-2FX or to other VIP2 models including VIP2-20*, VIP2-40, and VIP2-50.
* VIP2-10 and VIP2-20 are no longer available for purchase
If one of these interface processors is installed in your Cisco 7000 series or Cisco 7500 series router, and your router is running a Cisco IOS Release 12.0 software image, you will see the following display at system startup:
