PA-H and PA-2H HSSI Port Adapter Configuration

Cisco recently discovered and fixed a bug in the HSSI port adapter which was characterized by an "Overrun/Underrun" condition that reduced overall port adapter performance in configurations with high loads on the HSSI port adapter.

The problem has been fixed in IOS release 11.1(9) CA1. Cisco recommends that HSSI port adapter customers implement the IOS 11.1(9) CA1 release to avoid the "Overrun/Underrrun" condition. Note that many customers have been completely satisfied with the performance and reliability of the HSSI Port Adapter and do not need the software fix found in release 11.1(9)CA1.

This fix is designed for customers who:

Use the HSSI port adapters to transmit or receive large numbers of small packets (e.g. 64 byte packets)

Have experienced overruns or underruns in their HSSI network

Regularly require maximum performance and throughput from the port adapter

The HSSI port adapter bug fix in 11.1(9) CA1 has been tested in the following configurations:

VIP2 bay#1 PA-H, VIP2 bay#2 blank

VIP2 bay#1 PA-H, VIP2 bay#2 PA-H

VIP2 bay#1 PA-2H, VIP2 bay#2 blank

7200 PA-H

Cisco recommends that customers *temporarily* limit HSSI port adapter configurations to the tested configurations listed above. Testing continues for other configurations. Until testing is complete, Cisco recommends that customers do not implement HSSI port adapter configurations other than those listed above.

Cisco expects to have more HSSI port adapter configurations tested in the very near future. For current status of HSSI port adapter configuration testing, please continue to refer to this URL or contact your local Cisco Customer Services Representative.
