Special Configurations
This chapter describes how to set up the access point/bridge in special network roles You can set up the access point/bridge as an access point so that clients can associate to it or as a workgroup bridge so that Ethernet-enabled devices can connect to the LAN
This chapter consists of these sections:
•Configuring the Access Point/Bridge as an Access Point
•Configuring the Access Point/Bridge as a Workgroup Bridge
Configuring the Access Point/Bridge as an Access Point
The access point/bridge can be configured as a root access point. In this role, it accepts associations from the following devices:
•Wireless clients
•Repeater access points
•Non-root bridges
•Workgroup bridges
Follow these steps to configure the access point/bridge as an access point:
Syntax Description
root-ap-only
Specifies that the access point/bridge functions as a root access point. If the Ethernet interface is not functional, the unit attempts to continue access point operation. However, you can specify a fallback mode for the radio.
fallback repeater
(Optional) Specifies that the access point should operate in repeater mode when the primary Ethernet interface is not functional.
Note Setting the fallback repeater option does not make the access point a repeater access point.
fallback shutdown
(Optional) Specifies that the access point should shutdown when the primary Ethernet interface is not functional.
Configuring the Access Point/Bridge as a Workgroup Bridge
The access point/bridge can be configured as a workgroup bridge. In this role, the access point/bridge has the following functionality:
•Associates to the following devices:
–Root and repeater access points
–Non-root Cisco Aironet 350 Series Bridge (with clients)
•Operates with both VxWorks and 802.11b/g IOS-based access points and bridges
•Accepts only wired clients
•Informs its root parent of all attached wired clients using IAPP messaging
Restrictions
The following restrictions apply when the access point/bridge is configured as a workgroup bridge:
•Operates only with Cisco access points and bridges
•Must be treated as an infrastructure client or as a BSS client by root. When treated as an infrastructure client, the workgroup bridge should have a VLAN configured as well. When treated as a BSS client, a VLAN is not required.
•The CLI "infrastructure_client" has to be set at IOS AP or Root Bridge in order for the workgroup bridge to function in a VLAN environment
•The CLI "infrastructure_client" cannot be set in order for IOS AP or Root Bridge to work with a 350 or 340 series workgroup bridge in a VLAN environment.
Follow these steps to configure the bridge as a workgroup bridge
:
Syntax Description
station-role workgroup-bridge
Specifies that the access point/bridge operates in workgroup bridge mode. As a workgroup bridge, the device associates to an access point or bridge as a client and provides a wireless LAN connection for devices connected to its Ethernet port.
