Introduction
The Voice Connector is a Cisco Unity (with Microsoft Exchange) networking component that enables messaging between:
•
Cisco Unity servers that access separate directories.
•
Cisco Unity servers and other voice messaging systems by way of AMIS, VPIM, or the Cisco Unity Bridge.
Note that Voice Connector for Exchange 2000 version 14.0(1) can be installed on either an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 server.
Compatibility Information
For detailed information on the networking option combinations and versions of Cisco Unity that can be used with Voice Connector 14.0(1), see Cisco Unity Networking Options Requirements (Cisco Unity Version 5.x and Later), available at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/compatibility/matrix/cunetoptionsreqs.html.
System Requirements
Install the Voice Connector on any Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 server that is not part of an Exchange cluster (Microsoft does not support third-party connectors on an Exchange cluster server). Although the Voice Connector can be installed on the Cisco Unity server (when Exchange is also on the server), this is not recommended for performance reasons.
CautionInstalling the Voice Connector on an Exchange 2007 server is not supported.
If the Exchange server on which the Voice Connector will be installed is in a different routing group than the Exchange servers on which Cisco Unity subscribers are homed, routing group connectors must be configured between the routing groups.
The Voice Connector service is automatically configured to log on as the account that is associated with the Exchange server on which the Voice Connector is installed (sometimes referred to as the "Local System" account). The account that the service logs on as should not be changed.
CautionDo not change the default permissions for the Local System account. In addition, do not change the permissions granted to Exchange administrative groups during Exchange installation. The Voice Connector logs on using that account, and if you change permissions, the Voice Connector may not function properly.
CautionInstalling the Transport Event Sink for VPIM Networking on an Exchange 2007 server is not supported.
In order to view Voice Connector properties in Exchange System Manager, Microsoft Windows Script Host version 5.6 or later must be installed on the Exchange server on which the Voice Connector is installed. Note that if the Exchange server uses an earlier version of Windows Script Host, the Voice Connector functions properly, but you will not be able to view Voice Connector properties in Exchange System Manager.
Hard Disk Space Requirements
The Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 private store consumes more hard disk space after the Voice Connector is installed. Administrators should plan to have sufficient space available on the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 server that will host the Voice Connector for Exchange 2000. Lack of disk space introduces a risk of experiencing severe problems on the Exchange server.
The required space is directly related to the amount of traffic processed by the Voice Connector per 24 hours, and the file size of the messages. Table 1 provides storage requirements for the Exchange server to handle the increase in size of the Priv1.edb and Priv1.stm files. These requirements are in addition to the current storage requirements on the server to handle activity unrelated to the Voice Connector.

Downloading the Voice Connector
To Download the Voice Connector
Step 1
On a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, go to the Voice and Unified Communications Download page at http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/pub/Redirect.x?mdfid=278875240.
Note
To access the software download page, you must be logged on to Cisco.com as a registered user.
Step 2
In the tree control on the Downloads page, expand Unified Communications Applications > Voice Mail and Unified Messaging > Cisco Unity. Download the file CiscoUnityVoiceConnector14.0.1-Ex2000.exe to the directory of your choice.
Note
Confirm that the computer you are using has sufficient hard disk space for the downloaded file. The download file size appears on the Downloads page.
Step 3
Unzip the downloaded file and extract the files to the directory of your choice. The extracted files must be accessible from the Exchange server on which the Voice Connector will be installed. (The Voice Connector Setup program creates several folders within the folder in which the Exchange server software is installed and copies files to these folders.)
Step 4
Delete the downloaded zip file to free hard disk space.
Installing the Voice Connector
If you have not already done so, uninstall any previous version of the Voice Connector that is on the server on which you will be installing the Voice Connector. See the "Uninstalling the Voice Connector" section.
As a best practice, back up the Exchange server before installing the Voice Connector.
We also recommend that you run the Cisco Unity Permissions wizard version 5.0(1) or later on a Cisco Unity server in the network and select the Report on Current Permissions option before installing the Voice Connector, to confirm that permissions are set properly. Download and run the latest version of the Permissions wizard that is applicable to your version of Cisco Unity. The Permissions wizard is available at http://www.ciscounitytools.com/4_x_tools.htm.

Installing the Voice Connector for VPIM Networking
CautionInstalling the Voice Connector on an Exchange 2007 server is not supported.
To set up VPIM Networking, the Voice Connector and the Transport Event Sink must be installed. Although you use the same Voice Connector installation program to install these components, where you install them depends on the network configuration.
If you are installing the Voice Connector on multiple Exchange servers, in most cases you install the Transport Event Sink only once. The Exchange server on which the Transport Event Sink is installed should be the Exchange server that will receive incoming VPIM messages. Only one instance of the Transport Event Sink is necessary when all VPIM messages will be routed through a single Exchange server. When incoming VPIM messages will be routed through multiple Exchange servers, the Voice Connector and Transport Event Sink should be installed on each of the servers.

Uninstalling the Voice Connector
The uninstall procedure that you use depends on the Cisco Unity Voice Connector version in use. Beginning with Cisco Unity version 4.0(1), the Voice Connector itself was assigned a version separate from the Cisco Unity version. Voice Connector version 14.0(1) is included with Cisco Unity 7.0(2).
To determine the version of an installed Voice Connector, see the "Determining the Voice Connector Version" section.
In the following "Uninstall Procedures" section, do the procedure that is applicable to your installation, depending on the versions of Exchange and the Voice Connector.
Uninstall Procedures
This section contains three procedures. Do the procedure that applies to your installation:
•
To Uninstall the Voice Connector for Exchange 2000 (Voice Connector Version 14.0 and 12.0)
•
To Uninstall the Voice Connector for Exchange 2000 (Voice Connector Version 10.0 Through 11.0)
•
To Uninstall the Voice Connector for Exchange 5.5 (Voice Connector Version 10.0 Through 11.0)
To Uninstall the Voice Connector for Exchange 2000 (Voice Connector Version 14.0 and 12.0)
Step 1
If you are not using secure messaging, if the Voice Connector is installed on the Cisco Unity server, or if you have already backed up the Cisco Unity server (including the secure messaging certificate) by using the Cisco Unity Disaster Recovery tools (DiRT), skip to Step 7. Otherwise, continue with Step 2 to back up the secure messaging certificates.
CautionUninstalling the Voice Connector on an Exchange server that does not also host Cisco Unity removes the secure messaging certificates from the Exchange server. If you do not have a backup of the certificates, and you later reinstall the Voice Connector, subscribers will not be able to access previously recorded secure messages that are forwarded through the Voice Connector.
Step 2
On the Cisco Unity server (the secondary server, if Cisco Unity failover is configured), install the latest versions of DiRT, if the tools are not already installed. DiRT is available at http://ciscounitytools.com/App_DisasterRecoveryTools.htm.
Step 3
Open the Disaster Recovery Backup tool.
Step 4
Enter a location in the Backup Target Location field, and check the Include Security Certificate Used for Secure Messaging check box.
Step 5
Configure any additional options for other items you want to back up. Refer to DiRT Help for detailed instructions. (The Help file, UnityDisasterRecovery.htm, is in the same directory as UnityDisasterRecoveryBackup.exe.)
CautionFollow Help carefully. DiRT includes a variety of options that you must understand to use the tools successfully. In addition, the account you are logged on as when you back up Cisco Unity data must have sufficient permissions or the backup will fail.
Step 6
Click Back Up Now to start the backup. When the backup completes, click Exit to close the Disaster Recovery Backup tool.
Step 7
Log on to the Exchange server on which the Voice Connector is installed.
Step 8
On the Windows Start menu, click Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

New and Changed Requirements and Support—Release 14.0(1)
There are no new or changed requirements or support in Cisco Unity Voice Connector for Microsoft Exchange Release 14.0(1).
See the release notes of the applicable version for information on new and changed requirements and support in earlier versions of the Voice Connector. Release notes for all versions of the Voice Connector are available at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_release_notes_list.html.
New and Changed Functionality—Release 14.0(1)
This section contains information about new and changed functionality for Cisco Unity Voice Connector for Microsoft Exchange Release 14.0(1) only. See the release notes of the applicable version for information on new and changed functionality in earlier versions of the Voice Connector. Release notes for all versions of the Voice Connector are available at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_release_notes_list.html.
Note that the new functionality provided by Voice Connector 14.0(1) is available only with Cisco Unity with Microsoft Exchange, Release 7.0(2) and later.
Voice Message-Duration Tagging
When the Voice Connector processes voice messages for Cisco Unity subscribers, it includes a tag that indicates the duration of the voice recording. This tag can be used by visual clients (such as Phone View) to display the length of the message.
VPIM Delivery Location Configuration Options
When used with Cisco Unity 7.0(2), Voice Connector 14.0(1) supports the following new VPIM delivery location configuration options, which apply when sending messages from Cisco Unity to the delivery location:
•
Remove Message Subject—If enabled, the Voice Connector does not include the "Subject:" MIME header or value when converting the message to VPIM for sending to this location.
•
Remove All Text Attachments—If enabled, the Voice Connector removes all text attachments when converting the voice message to VPIM for sending to this location. This includes any previous vCard attachments on the message; however, if the delivery location is configured to include the sender's vCard, this vCard will still be added to the message before sending.
•
Remove All Fax Attachments—If enabled, the Voice Connector removes all fax attachments when converting the message to VPIM for sending to this location.
Note that when any of these settings are enabled, the sender is not notified that part of the message has been removed.
Warning Message When Uninstalling the Voice Connector
The uninstall program for the Secure Messaging Service component of the Voice Connector 14.0(1) includes a warning message box that alerts you that you should back up the certificates used in message encryption and decryption before uninstalling this component. See also the "Secure Messaging Certificates Are Removed When Uninstalling the Voice Connector" section.
Installation and Upgrade Notes
Secure Messaging Certificates Are Removed When Uninstalling the Voice Connector
Uninstalling the Secure Messaging Service component of the Voice Connector 14.0(1) or 12.0(1) on an Exchange server that does not also host Cisco Unity removes the secure messaging certificate from the Exchange server. If you do not have a backup of the certificate, and you later reinstall the Voice Connector (for example, to install a newer version), subscribers will not be able to access previously recorded secure messages that are forwarded through the Voice Connector. To avoid this situation, back up the certificate on the Cisco Unity server by using the Cisco Unity Disaster Recovery tools (DiRT) before uninstalling the Voice Connector, so that you can restore the certificate to the Exchange server after reinstalling the Voice Connector. See the "Uninstall Procedures" section for instructions.
SMTP Pickup Directory
If the SMTP pickup directory was not changed in IIS by using metaedit, skip this section.
The Voice Connector places outgoing VPIM messages, outgoing messages to the Cisco Unity Bridge, and outgoing messages to Trusted Internet subscribers in the SMTP pickup directory on the Exchange server on which the Voice Connector is installed. In typical installations, the path to the SMTP pickup directory is C:\Program Files\Exchsvr\Mailroot\vs 1\Pickup. The Microsoft Windows SMTP service monitors the pickup directory, and when it detects a message in the directory, the service attempts to send the message to the destination specified in the message header.
During installation, the Voice Connector setup program obtains the path to the SMTP pickup directory from Active Directory. The Voice Connector setup displays the path on the Confirm SMTP Pickup Directory page and writes the path to the registry in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Active Voice\AvIvc\SmtpPickupPath. When the Voice Connector service starts, it reads the path stored in the SmtpPickupPath registry key, and subsequently places outgoing VPIM, Bridge, and Trusted Internet subscriber messages in that directory. If you have not changed the location of the SMTP pickup directory, you will not need to take any further action after installing the Voice Connector.
If you changed the SMTP pickup directory in Active Directory, Active Directory automatically updates the IIS metabase. In this case, the Voice Connector will use the path specified in Active Directory, and you will not need to take any further action after installing the Voice Connector. However, if you changed the path to the SMTP pickup directory in the IIS metabase by using metaedit, then Active Directory may not have been updated, and the Voice Connector may place outgoing VPIM, Bridge, and Trusted Internet subscriber messages in a directory that the SMTP service is not monitoring.
You can fix the problem by either changing the path to the SMTP pickup directory in Active Directory or changing the path in the SmtpPickupPath registry key.
To change the path to the SMTP pickup directory in Active Directory, you can use ADSI Edit. The path is stored in the attribute msExchSmtpPickupDirectory. For more information on using ADSI Edit, refer to the Microsoft documentation.
To change the path in the SmtpPickupPath registry key, do the following procedure.
To Change the SmtpPickupPath Registry Key
Step 1
Start Regedit.
CautionChanging the wrong registry key or entering an incorrect value can cause the server to malfunction. Before you edit the registry, confirm that you know how to restore it if a problem occurs. (See the "Restoring" topics in Registry Editor Help.) If you have any questions about changing registry key settings, contact Cisco TAC.
Step 2
If you do not have a current backup of the registry, click Registry > Export Registry File, and save the registry settings to a file.
Step 3
Expand the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Active Voice\AvIvc
Step 4
In the right-pane, double-click the SmtpPickupPath value.
Step 5
In the Edit String dialog box, change the path in the Value Data field, and click OK.
Step 6
Close Regedit.
Step 7
Open the Services MMC.
Step 8
Right-click Exchange 2000 Voice Connector (<Server name>), and click Restart.
Step 9
Close the Services MMC.
