CRITICAL HOTFIX AVAILABLE
CSCty22538
Communication can fail between Cisco Digital Media Manager (DMM) and its inventory of Cisco Digital Media Players (DMPs). In an affected deployment, error messages indicate that digital certificate expiration is the root cause.
HOTFIXYou can recover from these communication failures in 10 minutes or less by loading a hotfix on your DMM server. See http://cisco.com/web/software/282100271/56598/DMM-patch-CSCty22538-Readme.txt .
- The hotfix also works around a related failure, in which DMP certificate expiration disrupts use of a DMM advanced task called “File Transfer to DMP” ( CSCty23792 ).
- The hotfix DOES NOT improve disrupted IP phone-based remote control of the Cisco Cast electronic program guide ( CSCty36771 ).
The hotfix is fragile. IF YOU DO NOT use the permanent solution described below, any future upgrade of your DMM server could cause it to lose contact again with your affected DMPs. In such cases, you must then REAPPLY the hotfix.
PERMANENT FIXYou can prevent these communication failures altogether by installing DMP firmware release 5.2.2.3, which resolves these known defects: CSCty22538 , CSCty23792 , and CSCty36771 .
Note To download this DMP firmware, you must have a valid service contract associated to your Cisco.com profile. If you do not have a service contract you can get one through your Cisco account team, your Cisco partner, or a qualified Cisco reseller. Then, once you have the service, you must associate it to your Cisco.com user ID at https://tools.cisco.com/RPF/profile/edit_entitlement.do?Tab=3.
1. Apply the hotfix to your DMM server, if you have not already done so. Otherwise, it cannot direct your DMPs to install their new firmware.
2. Obtain the new DMP firmware.
a. Log in to your Cisco.com account, and then go to http://cisco.com/cisco/software/navigator.html?mdfid=280936311&flowid=21001 .
b. Click your DMP model in the Cisco Digital Media Players list.
c. Click Expand All in the versions tree, and then click 5.3.5 .
3. Install the new DMP firmware, as described in your Cisco DMS upgrade guide at http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6681/prod_installation_guides_list.html .

Before You Upgrade to Cisco DMS 5.2.3!
Some user experience factors and deployment considerations are changed in Cisco DMS 5.2.3 because this release includes improved and expanded user authentication features.
- LDAP Syntax
- Browser Redirect
- Network Design
- Digital Certificates
- Firewall Ports
- User Authentication in Federation Mode (Single Sign-on)
LDAP Syntax
This release is more strict than any prior release in its enforcement of proper LDAP syntax. Now, when you specify the administrator DN, you must use proper syntax, which conforms exactly to LDIF grammar.
When you use poor syntax here for the first time while your DMM appliance runs Cisco DMS 5.2.3, we show you, the administrator, this error message: “Invalid username or password.”
But if you used and validated poor syntax in this way before upgrading to Cisco DMS 5.2.3, we do not repeat the validation process. Therefore — even though we do not show an error message to anyone — LDAP users simply cannot log in .
LDAP validation also fails now whenever any expression includes a space immediately to either side of:
Browser Redirect
We redirect all login attempts from your Show and Share server to your DMM server. This browser redirect occurs by design and is integral to every user authentication transaction.
Network Design
Cisco DMS 5.2.3 imposes a new network design restriction.
The restriction is essential to support and maintain encrypted session cookies that cross-authenticate your Cisco DMS servers. As of this release, the FQDNs for your DMM appliance and your Show and Share appliance must share the same Internet domain — and subdomain, where applicable.
Show and Share login attempts all fail.
Digital Certificates
We recommend for Cisco DMS 5.2.3 that you stop all use of self-signed digital certificates.
Although we do not force you to buy and install third-party identity certificates, failing to do so will affect all users of Show and Share in your network.
When you use self-signed certificates, a browser message disrupts login authentication for Show and Share users by claiming that your login server is not trusted. This occurs with any and every supported method for user authentication — embedded , LDAP , and federation .
In previous versions of Cisco DMS, you only needed to install a third-party certificate on the Cisco Show and Share appliance to prevent these messages from appearing. In Cisco DMS 5.2.3, you also need to install a third-party certificate on the Cisco DMM server to prevent users from seeing these messages. See the Manage Digital Certificates chapter in the Administration Guide for Cisco Digital Media Suite 5.2.x Appliances on Cisco.com for more information about installing certificates:
http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_2/dms/aai/administration/guide/certs.html
Firewall Ports
In Cisco DMS 5.2.3, you must open any firewall ports that affect traffic between your servers.
The most urgent use case is, for example, when your DMM server runs on a fully secured network segment but your Show and Share server is available to a wider population. Even so, this guidance applies to every deployment .
Otherwise, a browser message disrupts login authentication for Show and Share users by claiming that your login server is not trusted.
NoteAdditional errors and failures might occur at the same time. Additional errors and failures might occur at the same time.
User Authentication in Federation Mode (Single Sign-on)
When you migrate Cisco DMS user authentication services from LDAP mode to Federation mode — assuming that you ever do — PAY URGENTLY CLOSE ATTENTION to the selection state of these two check boxes:
When you migrate from LDAP to Federation mode while these check boxes are both CHECKED, we keep and continue to use all user role assignment records for Show and Share. In addition, we keep and continue to use all records that associate individual users with the videos (and other assets) they published to Show and Share.
When you migrate from LDAP to Federation mode while these check boxes are both CLEARED, we delete all user role assignment records for Show and Share. In addition, we delete all records that associate individual users with the videos (and other assets) they published to Show and Share.
Introduction
Cisco Digital Media Suite (Cisco DMS) combines these hardware and software products and their respective accessories:
Encoding hardware to capture and digitize live and on-demand video for delivery across an IP network, through Cisco Video Portal , to any desktop-based web browser.

New and Changed Information
New in Cisco DMS 5.2.3
The following are the key changes to Cisco DMS 5.2.3. It provides an overview of the major changes; it is not a comprehensive list of all changes.
Changes to Cisco DMS 5.2.3
Cisco Show and Share and Cisco Digital Signs Failover
You can configure your Cisco Digital Signs and Cisco Show and Share implementations for stateless, active/standby failover. See the Failover Configuration Guide for Cisco Digital Media Suite 5.2.x for more information:
http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_2/dms/failover_guide/dmsfailover.html
You can use federation services with a SAML 2.0-compliant identity server (IdP) to support service provider (SP)-initiated “single sign on” login authentication in your network (following an initial synchronization to a Microsoft Active Directory Server that populates the DMM user database).
- The hardware model dependency for backup/restore has been removed in Cisco DMS 5.2.3.
- You now have the option to back up Digital Signs content when you back up your DMM appliance.
The ability to perform remote software upgrades has been added to Cisco DMS 5.2.3. You cannot perform a remote upgrade to Cisco DMS 5.2.3, but you will be able to perform a remote upgrade from Cisco DMS 5.2.3 to a later version.
Notifications for upcoming certificate expiration have been added. Additional certificate formats are now supported.
Cisco Show and Share Changes for Viewers
You can now display the Cisco Show and Share interface in English, Spanish, or French.
To make Cisco Show and Share more accessible, keyboard navigation of the interface has been added or enhanced.
Home Page, My Account Page, and Video Player Page Redesign
The Cisco Show and Share Home page has been redesigned to make it easier to sort and filter the video list. Additionally, videos with viewing restrictions (private videos) no longer appear in the video list on the Home page. Instead, they load on the Private tab, on your My Account page.
The My Account page (previously called My Show and Share) has been redesigned to make it easier to find the videos that you uploaded and the videos that include you in the restricted viewing list.
The Video Player page features new, sleeker player controls in both the on-page and the fullscreen views. Additionally, functions such as adding a video to your favorites or sharing a video with friends have been made easier to find.
Video Embedding Option Enhancement
An additional method for embedding Flash videos, one that does not use Javascript, has been added.
Cisco Show and Share now ships with a series of seven quick start videos. See the Quick Start category on the Cisco Show and Share home page.
Cisco Show and Share Changes for Administrators
You can select multiple users and assign or remove roles for them as a group.
You can change the destination of the Cisco Show and Share help link, allowing you to point to your own organization’s policies, procedures, standards, and support area.
The Cisco Show and Share interface is available in the following languages:
You can enable image smoothing for synchronized slides to improve slide quality when played back in the Slides tab.
Changes to Cisco Digital Signs
Our Cisco Medianet 2.1 feature support is expanded for DMP 4310G endpoints, as compared to the prior extent of their support. These DMPs can now receive and parse enough information through DHCP option 125 to autoregister themselves with your DMM server. They support discovery via DHCP and they can learn their physical location.
In this release, we introduce Medianet 2.1 support on DMP 4400G endpoints. Support on this platform is identical to that for a DMP 4310G but with one exception. Ordinarily, a DMP 4400G can participate in networks via either an Ethernet connection or a Wi-Fi connection. However, a Wi-Fi connection by a DMP 4400G prevents it from obtaining or using any Location Services information that Medianet might be configured to provide.
In this release, we introduce DMP 4310G support for touchscreen drivers.
Use Cisco ECDS as the content distribution system for Cisco Digital Signs.
Use Session Description Protocol (SDP) in Cisco Digital Signs to join and play live multicast video streams (MPEG-TS/RTP/UDP) when the multicast host is a Cisco MDE 1100.
Changes to DMS-Admin
This DMS-Admin release is more strict than any prior release in its enforcement of proper LDAP syntax. Now, when you specify the “administrator DN” at Administration > Security > Authentication, you must use syntax that conforms exactly to LDIF grammar.
Otherwise, you will observe one of two possible results.
- First-time LDAP configuration — When your DMM appliance already runs DMS 5.2.3 before you ever use poor LDAP syntax here, we show you, the administrator, this error message: “Invalid username or password.”
- Upgraded LDAP configuration — When you use and validate poor LDAP syntax here in any earlier DMS-Admin release, before upgrading to Cisco DMS 5.2.3, we do not repeat the validation process. Therefore — even though we do not show an error message to anyone, including you — LDAP users simply cannot log in.
In either case, you must correct your LDAP syntax.
NoteAn LDAP expression must never include a space immediately to either side of a “=” sign. Similarly, it must never include a space immediately to either side of an “objectClass” attribute. Otherwise, validation fails. An LDAP expression must never include a space immediately to either side of a “=” sign. Similarly, it must never include a space immediately to either side of an “objectClass” attribute. Otherwise, validation fails.
Changes to Cisco Digital Signs
Cisco Digital Media Player 4310G
All-new DMP 4310G endpoints are the newest model in our versatile family of Cisco Digital Media Players. This newest model introduces many hardware and software features that older DMP models could not include. See http://cisco.com/go/dms/dmp/datasheets .
DMP 4310G endpoints in the 5.2.2 release support some technologies of Cisco Medianet. These DMPs know and can broadcast their own product type and model, software version, and - in some cases - physical location. In turn, they can receive their IP address, VLAN assignment, and network configuration settings automatically, in anticipation of you registering them to your DMM server. As of this release, these DMPs do not support service discovery via DHCP or autoregistration to your DMM server.
Digital Media Designer Best Practices Assistant
Digital Media Designer 5.2.2 introduces a “best practices” assistant. This feature analyzes your presentation design choices and recommends ways to optimize your designs for DMP compatibility and performance.
Improved Grouping and Management in Digital Signs
Digital Signs (formerly DMM-DSM) 5.2.2 introduces an improved user interface for DMP management and grouping. In addition, it can detect whether Cisco LCD Professional series flat-panel displays are turned On or Off.
Digital Media Player Remote Control Button Remapping
Digital Media Player Device Manager 5.2.2 introduces features to remap button function assignments on a DMP remote control.
Resume Interrupted DMS-CD Deployments
Cisco DMS Content Distribution (DMS-CD) introduces a feature to turn Off the automatic resumption of interrupted deployments. By turning these Off, you can force DMS-CD to retrieve dynamic assets repeatedly even though their filenames and URIs are not changed. And in so doing, you cause your DMPs to have and use the newest asset revisions known to DMS-CD.
This release introduces support for RTP streaming when the DMP model is 4310G.
Changes in Cisco Show and Share
For a video tour of these features, see the What’s New in Cisco Show and Share 5.2.2 video on Cisco.com.
Authors have the option of preventing viewers from anonymously commenting on their videos. This option is applied on a video by video basis when the video is published. System administrators can globally prevent viewers from anonymously commenting on videos. If anonymous comments are prevented globally, authors cannot enable it for individual videos.
See http://tools.cisco.com/squish/216D1 for the author instructions.
See http://tools.cisco.com/squish/5e0Fe for the system administrator instructions.
Full Screen Video Playback Controls
Video player controls are now available during full screen playback. Viewers can adjust the volume, pause and play the video, skip forward or backwards a few seconds, or skip to the beginning of the video without leaving full screen mode.
See http://tools.cisco.com/squish/E4fb3 .
A new report, Viewer Aggregation, has been added to the author reports in My Show and Share. This report allows you to see who had been viewing your videos, the number of times they viewed each video, and the average and total play times for each video. Additionally, the fields used to generate have been updated to make it easier to generate the reports.
See http://tools.cisco.com/squish/CB128 .
Support for Unicode characters in video titles, video descriptions, and category names has been added in this release.
Administrators have three additional themes, Earth, Stone, and Grass, to choose from when customizing the look and feel of Cisco Show and Share. The original themes, Fire and Ocean, are still available.
See http://tools.cisco.com/squish/80243 .
The “superuser” user now has the ability to change the owner of a category.
New in Cisco DMS 5.2.1
The following are the key changes to Cisco DMS 5.2.1:
- Private Category Removal
- Cisco Media Experience Engine Integration
- Active Directory Group Import
- Certificate Import
- Download Recorded Video
- URL Change
- Video Failover on the DMPs
Private categories are removed from Cisco Show and Share 5.2.1.
In Cisco Show and Share 5.2, you could assign user groups to categories to limit who could view the video listing. The restriction applied only to viewing the list of videos within the category. The viewing restrictions did not apply to the videos themselves. Site visitors could still see videos assigned to private categories if they found them through some other method, such as through a search or using the tag filter.
When you upgrade to Cisco Show and Share 5.2.1, you have the option of making existing private categories public or of removing the category. If you make a private category public, all site visitors will be able to view the list of videos in that category. Removing the private category does not cause the videos to be removed; the videos remain in the system and are available to site visitors. It is just the category that lists the videos that is removed.
In both cases the videos in the category are viewable by all site visitors unless you had previously assigned user group viewing restrictions to the videos themselves.
Cisco Media Experience Engine Integration
Administrators can configure a Cisco Media Experience Engine (MXE) to automatically transcode videos that users upload into a common format. This allows the system to support a greater number of video source formats and converts them to a format that is can be edited in the Cisco Show and Share video editor.
For more information about configuring this feature, see the User Guide for Show and Share Administration 5.2.x .
In Cisco DMM 5.2, administrators could import users from an Active Directory database. In Cisco DMM 5.2.1, administrators can import user groups from Active Directory.
For more information about configuring this feature, see the User Guide for Cisco Digital Media Manager 5.2.x .
Cisco DMM 5.2 and Cisco Show and Share 5.2 ship with a self-signed certificate. Because the certificate is self-signed, users receive a security warning when they visit the site.
For Cisco Show and Share 5.2.1, administrators can import signed certificates and prevent users from seeing the warning. Administrators cannot import signed certificates into Cisco DMM 5.2.1.
For more information about this feature, see the Administration Guide for Cisco Digital Media Suite 5.2.x Appliances .
In Cisco Show and Share 5.2.1, you have the option of downloading video recorded directly in Show and Share. Previously, you did not have the ability to download the recorded video.
You can now access Cisco Show and Share without having to specify the port number in the URL. For example, instead of typing https://show_and_share.example.com:8443 , you can access the Cisco Show and Share server by typing http://show_and_share.example.com . The browser is automatically redirected to the correct port.
Video failover on the Cisco DMPs is now disabled by default.
Compatibility Matrix for Upgrading

Installation Notes
Caution Cisco DMS appliances do not work correctly without a DNS server.
Enter fully-qualified domain names (FQDN) and not IP addresses during setup in AAI. Otherwise, Cisco DMS cannot operate as designed and most of its functions will fail.
Do not append a trailing dot to any FQDN during setup.
- To maintain network security, your DMM appliances and Show and Share appliances use digital certificates to communicate. These certificates use the DNS-resolvable hostname to identify each appliance uniquely. Therefore, you must enter the DNS-resolvable hostname for each appliance during setup when prompted to enter the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) in AAI.
- You must also configure each of your DMS appliances in AAI to point correctly to the DNS server for your network and configure that DNS server to associate the IP addresses that your DMS appliances use with the FQDNs that their digital certificates use.
Downgrade Support Notice
Caution Never upgrade software in your production network until you validate it in your test environment.
We advise that you back up all records, reports, data, configuration settings, digital assets, and so on before you begin any upgrade. Although your routine creation of such backups is a best practice with any software for any platform, it is especially important in our case. Cisco DMS includes multiple hardware platforms, whose reciprocal compatibility requires — among other things — that they all run contemporaneous software releases. Otherwise, their features are not aligned and their data exchanges cannot succeed.
The products that constitute Cisco DMS 5.2.1 support software downgrades to Cisco DMS 5.2.0 but not to any earlier release. The only downgrading method that we support is reinstallation of product software from the Cisco DMS 5.2.0 release — and only if you are licensed to run it — on Cisco equipment that we certify is compatible with the Cisco DMS 5.2.0 release.
If you roll back to software from Cisco DMS 5.2.0, you can restore only the settings that you saved in backups from the Cisco DMS 5.2.0 release.
• All of your Cisco DMS products must run software and firmware from the same, one release.
• Do not run Cisco DMS 5.2.1 and Cisco DMS 5.2.0 simultaneously in your network.
• After a downgrade, you will lose any settings or data that you saved within Cisco DMS 5.2.1.
• After a downgrade, you will lose all bug fixes that Cisco DMS 5.2.1 introduced.
• After a downgrade, you will lose all security enhancements that Cisco DMS 5.2.1 introduced.
• After a downgrade, you will lose all new features and capabilities that Cisco DMS 5.2.1 introduced.
• Downgraded DMPs will lose their static IP address settings, reverting to DHCP.
• You must erase any assets that remain in local storage on downgraded DMPs.
• RSS settings and content from Cisco DMS 5.2.1 will not work in Cisco DMS 5.2.0.
Cisco DMS devices in your production network must all run contemporaneous software. Whenever they do otherwise, you must upgrade or reinstall their software.
Cisco DMS 5.2.2 to Cisco DMS 5.2.3 Upgrade Notes
You can upgrade your Cisco DMS 5.2.2 system to Cisco DMS 5.2.3. If you are running a release earlier than 5.2.2, you must upgrade to 5.2.2 first, and then upgrade to 5.2.3. You must have a valid Cisco DMS 5.2 license to use this upgrade.
See Upgrade Guide for Cisco Digital Media Suite Release 5.2.3 on Cisco.com.
You cannot upgrade the following hardware platforms to Cisco DMS 5.2.3. See the Cisco DMS 5.2.3 Hardware Support Notice, for more information.
Cisco DMS 5.2.3 Hardware Support Notice
To the Cisco Digital Media System Community:
Technology advancements in video have made tremendous progress over the past three to four years. Enterprises are quickly adopting Cisco's digital signs and webcasting and video sharing technology and are using it in a broader set of use cases ever imagined. As a leader in the enterprise video market, we are continuing to develop new products and applications to provide our customers the latest integrated solutions to easily capture, manage and share video. We appreciate your support and use of the Cisco Digital Media System including our Digital Signs and Show and Share applications.
Our latest DMS release, v.5.2.3, is now available for our DMS customers and features a new of enhancements, features, and new products including our DMS Failover servers. However, this release also requires additional hardware support that is not available on previous DMS MCS-based server appliances. Table 9 lists the MCS server products affected by this announcement.
The date listed in Table 9 as the End of Sale (EOS) Date refers to the last day that a select DMS MCS server was offered for sale. The Cisco EOS policy requires that all EOS hardware products receive software maintenance updates for a period of three years. This is known as the Last Date of Support. We plan to offer a separate, DMS v.5.2.2.x patch release train in the 2nd half of 2011 to current customers with the servers listed in Table 9 . This patch release will provide many of the bug fixes included in our v.5.2.3 release but will not provide any new features or support for the new DMS Failover servers.
What are your product migration options?
We strongly encourage our DMS customers with servers listed in Table 9 to migrate to our new DMS UCS C-Series Rack-Mount servers. Migrating to these new servers will provide better application performance and support for the new features and products available in the DMS v.5.2.3 release and future DMS releases. Information about the DMS UCS servers can be found at: http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6682/products_data_sheets_list.html .

Important Notes
This section includes the following topics:
- DMP 4310G Notice Regarding Power over Ethernet (PoE)
- Cisco DMP 4305G Compatibility
- Low Memory Causes DMP 4305G Endpoints to Restart Automatically
- Compatibility Limitations with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)
DMP 4310G Notice Regarding Power over Ethernet (PoE)
Starting in 2009, a handful of Cisco StadiumVision customers participated in a special program to receive DMP 4310G endpoints whose hardware design was not yet utterly final. During this limited, pre-release program, we manufactured such units under the Cisco product ID "DMP-4310G-SE-K9." Partway through the limited release, we changed one physical component in the hardware design to improve the Power over Ethernet (PoE) performance of a DMP 4310G.
Is even one of these statements true for you?
- Your DMP 4310G was manufactured in or after September 2010.
- Your DMP 4310G serial number is USI1434xxxx or greater.
- We manufactured your DMP 4310G under the Cisco product ID "DMP-4310G-52-K9."
When even one of these statements is true, your DMP 4310G uses the improved PoE component. Nothing further about this topic applies to you or your DMP.
Otherwise, when even one statement is false , your DMP 4310G uses the original PoE component. We have identified a corner case in which these DMPs might not receive full PoE power. Suppose that a very long Ethernet cable connects a DMP 4310G to a network switch from the Cisco 3560 Series. And suppose also that the Ethernet cable length is so great that the level of PoE power becomes noticeably diminished after traveling its full distance to the DMP. In this scenario, your DMP cannot compensate for the degraded power because switches in the Cisco 3560 Series do not permit adjustments to the PoE power output.
We recommend that you do not obtain power for such DMPs from network switches in the Cisco 3560 Series. When you must do so, then take care to use the shortest possible Ethernet cord. Alternatively, you might use network switches from the Cisco 3750 Series, which offer configurable PoE power output.
Cisco DMP 4305G Compatibility
There is no 5.2.2 upgrade for the Cisco DMP 4305G. Cisco DMP 4305G appliances running 5.2.1 software are compatible with Cisco DMM 5.2.2.
Low Memory Causes DMP 4305G Endpoints to Restart Automatically
Rather than crashing when they run low on memory, DMPs are designed to restart automatically, which clears their memory and causes downtime of much less than 1 minute, as opposed to the lengthy downtime that a hard crash would cause. In the rare cases when DMPs do run out of memory and restart automatically, SWF files are almost always responsible. The known scenarios when this can occur are as follows.
- The file size is greater than 500KB for your SWF file. Larger SWF files do work correctly in most cases, but we recommend as a best practice that you should always strive to use the smallest possible SWF files. Smaller files are far less likely to be burdensome to your DMPs.
- Your SWF file uses bitmapped image files outside itself that have a very large file size, either individually or collectively. Any bitmapped image files that you use in the production of a SWF file should be small files. If a bitmapped file has a large file size, it is important for you to understand that merely reducing the height and width of its placeholder on your canvas in Adobe Flash (or any similar authoring tool that you might use to develop a SWF file) will not reduce the actual file size.
- The web page that you are showing uses too many embedded SWF files.
Additionally, we recommend that you use the following guidelines when you create SWF files.
- The resolution of the SWF can be up to 1920 x 1080 if the animations that are contained within the SWF are small and are restricted to a 640x480 region.
- Avoid redraw of the whole screen in your Flash animation.
- Multiple movements on different parts of the screen cause more slowdown than a concentrated movement.
- The FLV recommended resolution should be 320x240.
Compatibility Limitations with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)
DMPs that use firmware release 5.2 are compatible with only one version of Microsoft Internet Information Server. That supported version is IIS 6.0 for Windows 2003 Enterprise.
If you do not have the supported IIS version but want your DMPs to retrieve assets from a webserver, we recommend that you use Apache instead of IIS.

- Certificate Import
- Digital Media Suite (Cisco DMS)
- Cisco Digital Signs (formerly DMM-DSM) and Cisco Cast (formerly DMM-ETV)
- Digital Media Player
- Cisco Show and Share
- Cisco Digital Media Encoders
CA Chain verification fails when binary data present.
Symptom: Certificate import fails with message "Certificate rejected. Its subject does not match example.company.com." or "Certificate import failed. An internal error occurred. Please contact Cisco technical support."
Contitions: One or more certificates is not in PEM (base64-encoded ASCII) format. Certificates in PEM format can be identified by opening them in a text editor and verifying that they begin with the text "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----" and end with the text "-----END CERTIFICATE-----".
Workaround Convert each non-PEM format certificate to PEM format or re-request all certificates from your Certificate Authority (CA) in PEM format.
DMM/SNS should support wildcard SSL certificates
Symptom: Certificate import fails with message "Certificate rejected. Its subject does not match example.company.com."
Conditions: The identity certificate contains a wildcard in the common name (CN) portion of the subject (for example, *.example.com).
Workaround Obtain a non-wildcard certificate from your Certificate Authority (CA) where the common name (CN) matches exactly the hostname of the appliance.
Email addresses with special characters (eg: apostrophe symbol) are not displayed properly on the Administrative application settings page. Such email addresses cannot be edited.
The email addresses specified in settings page are displayed with escaped character syntax and cannot be edited.
Workaround Do not specify email addresses with special characters (such as apostrophe character) in Administrative application settings page or the notification policy page.
Main page load becomes slower with increas in published videos.
Show and Share does not delete local media deployed to external server
Media files are kept in the local hard drive even after they have been uploaded to an external server. This happens when the Show and Share is configured with an external deployment location.
In UCS210/200 when manually change NIC setting will show error msg
SNMP walk operation does not traverse entire subtree
SNMP walk operation, performed on a subtree that contains a table, does not traverse the full tree. The operation stops when it encounters a variable that is not implemented.
Search Query returns incorrect results after a range query is applied.
DMM-VP communication is not encrypted
Unauthorized entities are able to sniff data and configuration exchanged between DMM and VP appliances.
Conditions: DMM and VP exchange signaling and data, such as when content is ingested or deployed.
Workaround To prevent this vulnerability being exploited, please place DMM and VP appliances in the same datacenter.
Certain URL parameters must be better protected
Some of these parameters may lead to a cross site scripting (XSS) issue.
Workaround Refer to the Cisco Applied Mitigation Bulletin: Understanding Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Threat Vectors:
http://cisco.com/warp/public/707/cisco-amb-20060922-understanding-xss.shtml
Cannot login in federation, LDAP modes after backup and restore
Non-superusers cannot login. This happens when DMM was restored using a backup file where authentication mode was either LDAP or Federation.
1. Access the superuser login URL: http://<hostname>:8080/dmsadmin/admin/login
2. Enter superuser credentials and login
4. Without modifying any information on this page, scroll down and click 'Update'
After a few minutes, you should see a success message. All users should now be able to login as there were able to prior to doing restore.
In an ACNS/DMS integration, if an ACNS channel is deleted while still scheduled in DMS, the DMS playlist cannot be deleted in Cisco Digital Signs .
Workaround Create the set of the channels that are used to work with Cisco Digital Signs , and do not delete them. To remove a channel from ACNS, complete these steps. Before deletion, remove all schedules that are assigned to particular channel (past/current/future). Remove channel from ACNS only after you have removed the schedules.
Cisco DMS Content Distribution (DMS-CD) features do not support nested DMP groups. DMS-CD functions as if this group structure is flat and does not autodelete old assets from DMPs that it misunderstands to be part of multiple DMP groups.
Workaround If local storage is full on DMPs that should receive a deployment from DMS-CD, and these DMPs are in nested groups, use Play Now to deploy a command immediately to delete the obsolete files from them. After this cleanup is finished, try again to provision the new assets from DMS-CD as a scheduled, future event.
VoD playback does not stop immediately in Cisco Cast on DMP 4305G endpoints when you choose the VoD parent folder from the menu.
User role limitations do not apply to the Emergencies tab. Any Cisco Digital Signs user can use it.
Workaround Consider very carefully which Cisco Digital Signs users should have permission to work with your schedule and manage your DMP groups. Although all of the “Play in Future” features are suspended (for affected DMPs only) while a declared emergency is in progress, none of the “Play Now” features or “DMP Manager” features are suspended. Therefore, it is possible for a careless user or malicious user with sufficient permissions to start another event manually on the DMPs where an emergency message should play.
The total file size value for a playlist is reset to “N/A.” This occurs after you switch to WAAS mode, but only if Enterprise TV uses an asset that the playlist includes.
Campaign based detailed success report does not have ID3 tag info
POP content playback across midnight cause duration blank in report
Some playlists that rendered well in DMD 5.1 are rendered slowly in DMD 5.2.
Workaround Use the DMD “bridging image” feature that we introduced in 5.2.1.
Detail error report - start timestamps not matching with syslog
POP relies on the fact that repeat POP logs (in a playlist that has the same images rotating for example) comes in at relatively steady intervals. In 5.2.1 if the repeat POP logs come in at different repeat intervals (for example if one of the POP logs is missing or skipped) then the start time in the logs and the reports lose accuracy.
cannot browse EPG menu via remote under a certain scenario
Leave Cast overnight and the CH '+/-' and '^/v' take no effect any more if user tried to browse menu via remote control under a certain scenario.
4400/4305: Allow playlist background to display through transparent swf
SWF displays white background despite color setting
Workaround place an object of the desired color on the lowest layer of the swf to act as a background
Public playlist. wrong play durn calculation when 1 asset play till end
The user interface in Cisco Digital Signs sometimes shows a mistaken estimate of 0 (zero) seconds as the full duration of a video playlist. But even though this estimate is wrong, the error does not have any practical consequences. Playback starts and stops as scheduled, without disruption.
This error occurs after you set any constituent video asset in the playlist to use 0 seconds as its planned duration for playback.
A video asset whose planned duration is 0 (zero) seconds will play from beginning to end. (If you want to skip a video instead of playing it, you must remove it from the playlist. Any playlist?s constituent nonvideo assets must have a planned duration of at least 1 second.)
Workaround This defect is cosmetic. It does not have any consequences. There is no workaround.
4310 Cast incorrectly highlight EPG if sub hour div and stay long on EPG
A DMP 4310G does not always render yellow highlighting correctly in the electronic program guide (EPG) listings for Cisco Cast.
As you navigate through EPG program listings, yellow highlights on screen should always indicate which listing is the current focus of your navigation. However, this highlighting can become offset from your true focus. Before the EPG reaches this state, all of the following must be true simultaneously.
- A DMP 4310G controls the digital sign that shows your EPG.
- Your EPG navigation focus reaches to the outermost edge of your navigable EPG -- whether top, bottom, left, or right.
- You use an arrow button or other control that is not valid for your current focus.
- The reason this control is not valid in this context is that it would move focus beyond the outermost edge.
To recover from this state, press any valid button. Alternatively, double-press the same arrow button or other control that you previously invoked in error. The yellow highlight is then restored to your true focus.
Unable to stop Emergencies causing Play in Future to fail
Emergencies are started but cannot be stopped.
1. Select the DMP group showing "red" under DMM >> Digital Media Players >> Emergencies
A DMP restarts unexpectedly (5 percent of the time) if video playback is in progress when you simultaneously use a file transfer task to download assets to the DMP.
Workaround There are two methods to work around this problem. Before you use a file transfer application, run the “Stop All Applications” system task on each affected DMP. Alternatively, you can use Cisco DMS Content Distribution (DMS-CD) instead of the file transfer task.
Creating a system task to turn on/off syslog service on DMP
2. Go to Advanced Tasks > System Tasks > New System Task.
3. Enter in the values for turn ON:
– name: turn on syslog service
1 out of every 6 dmp doesn't reboot after upgrade from 5.1 or 5.2
Everytime URL/SWF changes to load new page rss may pause then continue
The RSS pauses scrolling/fading for several seconds when a playlist transitions for some playlist items. This issue occurs on both the 4305 and 4400.
The pause is associated with playlist transitions and scales according to playlist items. More graphic/CPU intensive items (large images/complex webpages) cause a longer pause in the RSS ticker.
Workaround Since this issue is caused by CPU cycle being split across loading new playlist items and the background rss ticker process, there are two possible workarounds:
- Avoid using graphics/CPU intensive playlist items. Try to use smaller images/simpler pages.
- If using the 4400, decrease the screen resolution through the DMP-DM. Since DMD presentations are scaled to screen size, there should not be a noticeable visual change in the presentation. However, when the flash display resolution is lower, RSS-tickers should process faster and the pauses will be less pronounced.
Two swfs in default presentation is not seen on dmp.
This problem occurs on 4305 because it does not support PNG and certain SWF file formats. The templates contain either unsupported PNG or SWF that are not showing up on 4305. This is a hardware limitation issue and should be moved to documentation.
This issue occurs under the following conditions:
- Using PNG in a presentation for 4305
- Using certain unsupported SWF files that require ActionScript 3 or Flash 8+
Workaround Avoid using PNGs of any kind. Convert them to progressive JPEG or non-animated GIFs. Avoid using Flash content created with ActionScript 3 or that requires Flash 8+.
4400 slide show performance is bad when images are in full screen mode.
Workaround None. Removing transitions can improve performance.
DMD with www.cisco.com will reboot 4305 in every 6 min.
DMP 4305 reboots while playing certain swf content of DMD presentations. The flash animations on certain URLs do not play when the DMP is pointed to it using the DMPDM
This issue occurs under the following conditions:
- DMD 5.2.1
- URLs containing certain swfs (such as www.cisco.com) or certain Swfs (published for Flash version 8 or higher) in a playlist
- Deployed on the 4305
Workaround None. Identify and remove the unsupported content.
4305:black and background color when transtionfrom video to video.
Running a slide show on 4305 rebooteds after 6 hours
A slideshow running on the 4305 reboots after 6-8 hours.
The issues occur in the following conditions:
Workaround We have found that the reboot issue can be resolved by disabling the video failover option. This option has also been turned off by default on the DMP. Users can also use an image playlist with a preload time instead of an image slideshow.
4400/4305: swf/html added as a media object doesn't generate pop log
Swf or image items added as a media object doesn't generate a proof of play log.
Workaround There is no workaround. This feature was not implemented
Starting and stopping DMP presentations take longer then 5.1.
Starting and stopping DMD presentations takes several seconds longer in 5.2.1 than in 5.1
Workaround Use a public playlist instead of a DMD presentation as it is implemented completely in JavaScript as apposed to using the Flash player.
DMP DVI to HDMI loses connection to display for second
In some cases, on the DMP 4305 connected to a display using a DVI to HDMI connection the DMP loses connection to the display for a split second causing the display to black screen for a short time.
Workaround Cisco displays do not exhibit this behavior. Use a Cisco display. Otherwise, try lowering the resolution on the display.
DMP 4305 RS232 has problems with contrast, tint, and sharpnes for DMTECH
ON the DMP 4305, when you connect it to a DMTech display and enable RS232, the 3 commands contrast, tint, and sharpness, are not working properly. Contrast and tint always get marked as having values of 100 no matter what you set them to and tint is set to 6. The 4400 works properly.
4310: ERROR PoP log not sent for unsupported content s.a html
4310 Cast Plugin shows black screen in ACNS mode
Cast Plugin does not load in a presentation when ACNS mode is enabled on DMP 4310.
This issue occurs under the following conditions:
1. Create a presentation from DMD consisting of Cast Plugin
2. Go to Settings->Media Delivery and setup ACNS
3. Go to Schedules->PLay in Future and Publish a job with the presentation you created to DMPs (I give a minimum of 10 minutes for content to download to ACNS server)
4. When the job pushes to DMP check the DMP screen
A black screen is seen in the place where Cast Plugin should have been visible.
4310: dmd playing img slide show /all media and rss reboot in 2.5 days.
A DMD presentation playing an image slideshow, an all-media playlist and rss ticker reboots in 2.5 days, on the DMP 4310.
This issue occurs when the following conditions are satisfied:
- DMD 5.2.2
- Presentation contains an image slideshow, an all-media playlist playing certain video content and a rss ticker.
- Deployed on DMP 4310
Certain video with High bitrate RTSP videos (> 18 Mbps) can cause high CPU usage. If this happens for extended period of time, the watchdog service on the DMP might think the DMP is frozen.
Workaround Several workarounds include:
1. Use h264 encoded videos for RTSP, since these use less bandwidth
2. Increase the watchdog mibs to:
watchdog.update_interval T_LONG 30
watchdog.reboot_interval T_LONG 3000
3. Manually disable the watchdog service vie sysmng shell or :7777 interface.
Unable to edit presentation created in 5.1 after upgrade to 5.2.2
Slide show transition will slow down the SWF in All media and rss
A slide show transitioning to the next image may cause any concurrently playing swf and/or RSS feed to slow down.
- DMD 5.2.2
- Slide show is present with animated transitions
- RSS feed and/or all-media playlist containing a swf item playing simultaneously
- Deployed on the 4310
Workaround Use the "No-effect" transition option for the slide show object.
4310: SWF reaching max memory sometimes don't restart successfully
SWF playback stops momentarily when the main processor in a DMP 4310G exhausts its reserved memory capacity to render a SWF.
The playback is stopped just long enough to clear DMP memory. Then, the DMP restarts SWF playback automatically. However, this process fails on rare occasions. When it fails on a DMP where failover is enabled, Flash failover occurs. But when it failes while failover is disabled, the DMP 4310G does not play anything.
To prevent this behavior, you might use a greater variety of SWF assets for your digital signs or edit your playback schedule.
Workaround To work around this problem, set the DMP failover URL to load the same SWF.
4400: RSS part flickering ticker when upgraded to 5.2.1
On-screen rendering of an RSS feed shows artifacts.
The RSS feed scrolls quickly inside a SWF file, which your DMP plays as part of a DMD presentation or plays from DMPDM.
Workaround Use a slower scrolling speed to reduce the number of visible artifacts.
DMD presentation deployed to DMP usb_2 stops playing after DMP reboot
DMM/DMP running 5.2.x and DMD playlist with 6 non-DMD playlists embeded (each non-DMD playlist containing 50 mpeg videos) with the presentation deployed to play locally from DMP usb_2 (USB Key).
Workaround This issue does not happen on DMM/DMP 5.1 using the older Java DMD to create the presentation.
Times always the same between published, draft, approved versions.
Publish a video. Manage the video and save as draft. Edit the draft and save it again. Timestamp is the same as the published video.
Adding multiple tags to Published video lists only one row of tag.
Edited videos appear to break when deleted between keyframes.
Streaming server needs to be able to stream at multiple/high bitrates.
Large (high bitrate) files may appear to not work properly. This is due to network bandwidth. Attempting the same operations on a computer connected via an ethernet (wired) connection will not have the same issues.
Second Level Categories are not alphabetically/numerically sorted
The factory-default video settings are not optimized on DMEs, and encoded video might be too bright.
Workaround Modify the settings until you are satisfied with the result.
DME2200 Have Audio Selection UnChecked for New WME Profiles.
When you create a new Windows Media Encoder profile using the ViewCast SCX application or web interface, the checkbox to select the Audio Source in the New Encoder profile defaults to blank. It should default to checked.
Additionally, the Audio Source selections are grayed out. Audio is not encoded with this new WME profile until you select the Audio Source box. None of the standard profiles, or profiles built with CODECs other than Windows Media Encoder, are affected.
The problem occurs because an extra file was added to the Cisco DME 2200 image.
Workaround Download and apply the RemoveATTFixforDME2200.zip patch from the Cisco.com software center. Follow the instructions that come with the patch. You need to log into Cisco.com to access the software.
Text field is missing after upgrade from 5.1 - 5.2. In 5.1, create a presentation with text, video, and non-video. After the upgrade text field is missing.
Updates and Errata for Printed Documentation
Online-only documents on Cisco.com for Cisco DMS are updated as needed, and we recommend that you check Cisco.com regularly for updates.
This section describes errors and omissions in the printed documentation for Cisco DMS 5.1. x , which were corrected in subsequent printings.

Getting Started Guide for Cisco Digital Media Players (78-19212-02)
Did your DMP ship with a printed copy of Getting Started Guide for Cisco Digital Media Players (78-19212-02), whose front-cover revision date is November 8, 2010?
If so, your printed copy contains errors about IP address configuration. It states that DMPDM settings on a DMP 4400G can cause your DMP to use a static IP address on a wireless network. However, we removed this option from DMPDM, where DHCP is now the only described address assignment method for wireless client DMPs.
Tip You can still assign a static IP address to a DMP 4400G. Simply do so from your wireless access point.
Remote Control Quick Start Guide for Cisco Digital Media Players
In some printings, the “Requirements and Limitations” section states incorrectly that the “Cisco Digital Media Player (DMP) 4400G devices, and 4305G devices after July 2008, ship with a remote control.” The remote control is an optional item that you must purchase separately.
Mounting Kit Assembly Guide for Cisco Digital Media Players
In some printings, Cisco product numbers are wrong for mount kits.
Quick Start Guide for Cisco Digital Media Player (4305G and 4400G)
Some printings of these two guides contain identical errors:
- Quick Start Guide for Cisco Digital Media Player 4305G
- Quick Start Guide for Cisco Digital Media Player 4400G
- The Concepts text on page 3 mentions “protective case” accessories for DMPs, which discourage tampering and prevent theft. The accessory category was renamed after these guides were printed. The category name is now “mount kit.”
- Also because the accessory category was renamed, the topic “Learning About the Protective Case for DMPs” became invalidated in multiple ways after these guides were printed:
– The topic heading should say “Learning About the Mounting Kit for DMPs.”
– The topic text mischaracterizes the title for mount kit assembly documentation. The correct title is Mounting Kit Assembly Guide for Cisco Digital Media Players .
