PVDM Requirements


This appendix lists the packet voice/data module (PVDM) requirements for MRP and ASI cards.

Default DSP Software Images

The type of software image (high-complexity image or medium-complexity image) that is loaded on multiservice route processors (MRPs) and analog station interfaces (ASIs) affects the processing of traffic on these cards. The default values for DSP software images on MRPs and ASIs are as follows:

High-complexity image. VIC-2DID, VIC-2BRI-NT/TE, VIC-2FXS, VIC-2FXO-M2, VIC-2FXO-M3, VIC-2FXO, VIC-2E/M, VWIC-1MFT-T1, VWIC-1MFT-E1, VWIC-2MFT-T1, and VWIC-2MFT-E1.

Medium-complexity image. VIC-8FXS (MRP3-8FXS and ASI81) and VIC-16FXS (MRP3-16FXS and ASI160).


Note The PVDM requirements listed in Table C-1 and in Table C-2 are based on the assumption that you are using the high complexity DSP software image for a particular voice WAN interface card (VWIC) or voice interface card (VIC).

General DSP Configuration Rules


Note On MFT-T1 and MFT-E1 cards, medium-complexity firmware is not recommended, since the use of this firmware limits echo cancellation coverage to 16 ms (also note that 33 percent more voice channels are supported on each DSP when medium complexity firmware is used). In addition, these cards, when installed in MRPs or ASIs, support up to one payload of T1 (24 channels) or E1 (30 channels) voice traffic.



Note Table 5 does not address transcoding. For information about transcoding considerations, see the "Transcoding" section later in this paper.


Table C-2 shows the PVDMs that are required for the supported combinations of WAN interface cards (WICs), VWICs, and VICs in MRPs and ASI81s. WICs, VWICs, and VICs are referred to by the abbreviations given in Table 1-1.

As Table C-2 indicates, WICs and data-only VWICs do not require PVDMs.


Note The typical PVDM configuration for MRP3-16FXSs ASI160s is a PVDM-16 in each of the two PVDM slots.
