Rack-Mounting the Cisco uBR 3x10 RF Switch with the
Cisco uBR10012 CMTS

This document provides basic instructions for mounting a Cisco uBR 3x10 RF Switch in a 4-post equipment rack with the Cisco uBR0012 CMTS.
Before proceeding with the installation, review the safety information in the Cisco RF Switch Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information.
Sample Configuration
The following illustration (see Figure 1) shows a sample configuration using the Cisco uBR3x10 RF Switch with a Cisco uBR10012 CMTS.

2 Required Equipments
The following equipments are required for mounting the Cisco uBR 3x10 RF Switch in a standard 19-inch-wide 4-post equipment rack.
Tip
To prevent overheating, install the RF Switch in an area that is properly ventilated or air conditioned.
Note
The rack-mount brackets that come in the accessory kit cannot be used with other racks, such as 23-inch telco racks.

Cables Used with the Configuration

Cable bundle for RF card to RF Switch:

For Cisco uBR10-MC5X20S/U/H and Cisco UBR-MC20X20V line cards—Three UCH2 units attached to one end and two RF Switch header blocks attached to the other end, 3.2 feet (1 m) long—Part number CAB-RFSW520QTIMM2

For Cisco uBR-MC3GX60V—Two UCH2 units attached to one end and two RF Switch header blocks attached to the other end, 3.2 feet (1 m) long—Part number CABRFSW3G60QTIMM2

Note
Quad-shield coaxial cable bundles for the line cards can be purchased from Cisco with the Universal Cable Holders (UCH) already connected to the coaxial cable bundles. Alternatively, custom-length quad-shield coaxial cable bundles can be purchased from third-party vendors, with the UCH either connected to the cable bundles or provided as seperate components.
Figure 2 shows the cable bundle for the Cisco uBR10-MC5X20S/U/H and Cisco UBR-MC20X20V cable interface line cards to RF Switch that has three UCH2 units attached to one end and two RF Switch header blocks attached to the other end. This cable is 3.2 feet (1 m) long and the part number is CAB-RFSW520QTIMM2.

Figure 3 shows the cable bundle for the Cisco uBR-MC3GX60V cable interface line card to RF Switch that has two UCH2 units attached to one end and two RF Switch header blocks attached to the other end. This cable is 3.2 feet (1 m) long and the part number is CABRFSW3G60QTIMM2.

Figure 4 shows the cable bundle for RF Switch to HFC plant that has 2 RF Switch header blocks attached to one end and 25 F connectors attached to the other end. This cable is 9.84 feet (3 m) long and the part number is CAB-RFSW520QTPMF2.

Figure 5 shows the cable bundle for RF Switch to HFC plant that has 2 RF Switch header blocks attached to one end and 20 F connectors attached to the other end. This cable is 9.84 feet (3 m) long and the part number is CABRFSW3G60TPMF2. This cable bundle is used only when the Cisco CMTS is loaded with Cisco uBR-MC3GX60V cable interface line cards.

Note
Customers purchasing custom-length quad-shield coaxial cable bundles from third-party vendors can purchase spare UCHs and spare RF Switch header blocks from Cisco.

3 Attaching the Brackets
To attach the brackets, perform the following steps:
Step 1
Locate the threaded holes at the front of the RF Switch chassis (both sides).
Step 2
Align the first rack-mount bracket with the threaded holes in the left-front side of the chassis. See Figure 6.
Step 3
Thread the M5 x 8 mm Phillips screws through the rack-mount bracket and into the side of the chassis.
Step 4
Use the # 2 Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws.
Step 5
Repeat Step 1 through Step 4 for the other bracket.

4 Rack-Mounting the Switch
CautionTwo people should perform this installation procedure.
Step 1
Ensure that all the modules are secure in the chassis.
Step 2
Position the chassis so that the rear panel is facing the same way as the connectors on the cards. See Figure 1.
Step 3
Slide the chassis into the rack. Use the illustrations to determine where you attach the chassis to the rack. See Figure 1.
Step 4
While keeping the brackets flush against the posts or mounting strips, position the chassis so that the holes in the brackets are aligned with those in the mounting strips.
Note
Use all four screws to fasten the two rack-mount brackets to the rack posts, because the brackets support the weight of the chassis, which is 36.6 lbs (16.6 kg).
Step 5
Insert all four 1/32 x 3/8 slotted screws (two on each side) through the brackets and into the mounting strip.
Tip
Insert the bottom screws first.
Step 6
Tighten all the screws.
5 Grounding the Chassis
CautionBefore connecting power and turning on the RF Switch, you must provide an adequate earth ground connection.
Step 1
Locate the ground lug holes on the left-side rear of the chassis. See Figure 7.
Step 2
Using number 4 AWG wire (recommended), insert the wire into the ground lug.
Step 3
Cover any exposed wire with heat-shrink tubing.
Step 4
Use the two M5 hex-head screws to attach the grounding lug to the chassis.
Step 5
Attach the wire to an appropriate earth ground location.

Attaching the Cable Management Bracket
A cable management bracket is included in the shipping container. We recommend using this bracket to ensure proper airflow in the chassis.
Step 1
Locate the threaded holes in the right-rear and left-rear side of the Cisco uBR10012 chassis. See Figure 1.
Step 2
Align the cable-management bracket (see Figure 8) with the threaded holes.
Step 3
Thread the countersunk screws through the bracket and into the chassis.
Step 4
Tighten the screws.
