This section explains the objectives, intended audience, and organization of the
Cisco uBR904 Cable Modem Installation and Configuration Guide, and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and information. Document Objectives
This installation guide explains the initial hardware installation and basic configuration procedures for the Cisco uBR904 cable modem units. It contains procedures for unpacking and installing the cable modem hardware, starting up the Cisco uBR904 cable modem, and configuring the cable modem automatically or manually.
CautionTo ensure compliance with U.S. export laws and regulations for 56-bit Data Encryption Standard (DES), and to prevent problems later on, refer to the section "Compliance with U.S. Export Laws and Regulations Regarding Encryption" in the chapter "," later in this document.
Audience
To use this publication, you should be familiar with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cable television wiring and equipment, and preferably have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician. You should also be familiar with the process of installing internal cards and external devices for personal computers.

This guide is organized into the following chapters and appendix:

Chapter 1, "," describes the physical properties of the Cisco cable modem and provides a functional overview of the cable modem.

Chapter 2, "," is a preparatory section that describes safety considerations, tools required, an overview of the installation, and procedures you should perform before the actual installation.

Chapter 4, "," provides instructions on configuring the cable modem in bridging and routing scenarios.

Chapter 5, "," provides guidelines for troubleshooting the hardware installation.

Appendix A, "," describes how to use the ROM monitor to isolate or rule out hardware problems encountered when installing your cable modem.

Cisco Connection Online
Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.
CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
