Is the port administratively disabled?

If the "Port [x] LG" LED is orange (where "x" is the number of the port), that Ethernet port is disabled. You can verify that a CDDI/FDDI port is disabled by using the show port command.  The connection state of the port appears under "Conn-State."

What are the proper cables for this product?

  • 10BaseT port?straight through RJ-45 cable to a router or workstation, or rolled RJ-45 cable to a hub or another switch
  • 10BaseF port? multimode fiber with an ST connector
  • FDDI port?multimode fiber with a MIC connector (for connections up to 2 km long), or singlemode fiber with an ST connector (for connections longer than 2 km)
  • CDDI port?data-grade RJ-45 rolled (Category 5)
How do I enable the port module?

Use the set port enable [#] command, where "#" is the number of the port.

How do I determine if an IP address is configured on the switch?

Enter the show interface command and check the inet, netmask, and broadcast settings.  The IP address has not been set if they are all set to "0.0.0.0."

How do I configure an IP address?

  • With software version 2.x, use the command set interface sc0 [IP address] [subnet mask]
  • With software version 3.x, use the command set workgroup 1 1-10 [IP address] [subnet mask]
  • With software version 4.x, use the command set ip vlan [VLAN #] 1-10 [IP address] [subnet mask]
How do I check the subnet mask on the switch and reconfigure it?
  • To check the subnet mask on the switch, use the show interface command. Look for a "netmask [subnet mask]" entry.
  • With software version 2.x, use the command set interface sc0 [IP address] [subnet mask] to reconfigure the subnet mask.
  • With software version 3.x, use the command set workgroup 1 1-10[IP address] [subnet mask] to reconfigure the subnet mask.
  • With software version 4.x, use the command set ip vlan [VLAN #] 1-10 [IP address] [subnet mask] to reconfigure the subnet mask.
Is there a default route on the switch?

Use the show ip route command to display the ip route table. Check the table for a default route.

How do I set a default route on the switch?

Use the set ip route default [gateway] [metric] command.

What VLAN configuration documents exist on Cisco.com?

Feature Configuration

How do I determine if both switch ports to which the end devices connect are in the same VLAN?  And is Spanning-Tree Protocol disabled on a VLAN?

You can configure two types of VLANs on a Catalyst 1200: bridge VLANs or IP VLANs. To verify that both switch ports are in the same VLAN, use either the show bridge or show ip vlan command. The output contains a table showing the VLAN port assignments. The second column of the table is labeled "Ports," and shows the ports assigned to each VLAN. Both ports you are trying to connect across must be assigned to the same VLAN.  The third column of the table is labeled "Spanning Tree" and shows whether Spanning-Tree Protocol is enabled or disabled.

How do I enable Spanning-Tree Protocol on the VLAN?

Use the set spantree enable [vlan_#] command, where "vlan_#" is the VLAN number.

Are the VLAN or trunk ports configured to pass that VLAN?

You can configure two types of VLANs on a Catalyst 1200: bridge VLANs or IP VLANs. To verify that both switch ports are in the same VLAN, use either the show bridge or show ip vlan command. The output contains a table showing the VLAN port assignments. The second column of the table is labeled "Ports", and shows the ports assigned to each VLAN. Both ports you are trying to connect across must be assigned to the same VLAN.

To check which VLANs are enabled on a FDDI trunk port, use the show trunk command.

How do I assign all non-trunk ports along the link to the same VLAN, and configure any trunk ports along the link to pass that VLAN?

  • To change VLAN port assignments, use the set bridge vlan command.
  • To change which VLANs are enabled on a FDDI trunk port, use the set trunk command.
Is the trunk port connected?

Use the show port command. The first section of the output is for the CDDI/FDDI ports. Check the output in the "Status" column. The status should be "connected" or "ok."

Is the trunk port trunking and configured to pass the desired VLAN range?

First use the show port command. The first section of the output is for the CDDI/FDDI ports. The status of the trunk port should be "Ok."  Then use the show trunk command. The output will show the VLAN range or individual VLAN numbers the trunk is configured to carry.

How do I configure trunking and/or the desired VLAN range on the trunk port?

Use the set trunk [vlan_range] command.
