Introduction

This document describes how to install the Cisco Security Manager (CSM) license for various options.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on the Cisco Security Manager.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Effects of Licensing on Installation

The terms of your Cisco Security Manager software license determine many things, including the features that are available to you and the number of devices that you can manage. For licensing purposes, the device count includes any physical device, security context, or a Catalyst Security Services Module that is in your Cisco Security Manager inventory and uses an IP address. Failover pairs count as one device.

When you upgrade from an earlier release, Cisco Security Manager does not prompt you for a license. Instead, it retains your license and continues to enforce its terms. If you upgrade during a free evaluation, the remaining time in your evaluation period does not change.

Two license types, Standard and Professional, are available, in addition to a free 90-day evaluation period, restricted to 50 devices.

  1. Cisco Security Manager and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Manager share one base license file and share many other, additional licenses that you can purchase. In order to obtain the base license, you must have (or obtain) a Cisco.com user ID, and you must register your copy of the software on Cisco.com. When you register, you must provide the Product Authorization Key (PAK) that is attached to the Software License Claim Certificate inside the shipped software package.

    Note: In Cisco Security Manager 3.1 and later, IPS Manager is no longer present (and therefore has no licensing requirement). It does not exist since the functionality has been integrated into the Cisco Security Manager client.

    After registration, the base software license is sent to the email address that you provided during registration. Keep the license in a secure location.

  2. Common Services does not require a license file.

  3. Auto Update Server does not require a license file.

  4. Your license files for Resource Manager Essentials (RME.lic) and Performance Monitor (mcpULperm.lic) are in the \license_files folder on your Security Manager installation DVD.

Standard Edition

If you purchase the Standard Edition, your license supports:

  1. One installation of Cisco Security Manager on one Windows-based server.

  2. The configuration or management of 5 devices (in the Standard-5 option) or 25 devices (in the Standard-25 option). This excludes Catalyst 6500 and 7600 Series devices and their associated service modules.

    If you purchase either the Standard-5 or Standard-25 license, you cannot purchase an incremental device license. Your license is fixed at either 5 or 25 devices.

Professional Edition

If you purchase the Professional Edition, your license supports:

  1. One installation of Cisco Security Manager on one Windows-based server.

  2. The configuration and management of 50 devices of all kinds (including Catalyst 6500 and 7600 Series devices and their associated service modules), with an option to purchase additional device license increments — 50-, 100-, 500-, or 1,000-device licenses.

    License limits are imposed when you exceed the allotted time (in the case of the evaluation license), or the number of devices that your license allows you to manage. The evaluation license provides the same privileges as the Professional Edition license. It is important that you register Cisco Security Manager as soon as you can within the first 90 days, and for the number of devices that you need, to ensure uninterrupted use of the product. Each time you start the application you are reminded of how many days remain on your evaluation license, and you are prompted to upgrade during the evaluation period. At the end of the evaluation period, you are prevented from logging in until you upgrade your license.

Steps to Install

After registration, the base software license is sent to the email address that you provide during registration. Keep the license file (.lic) in a secure location.

You have the option to install a Cisco Security Manager base license at installation time or after installation, when the application is running. Incremental device count license files are installed only after the application has been installed.

Complete these steps in order to install the license for the three different options.

At the Time of Installation

Complete these steps:

  1. Save the attached license file (.lic) from the email to your file system.

  2. Copy the saved license file to a known location on the Cisco Security Manager server file system.

  3. Run the Cisco Security Manager server installation.

  4. At the Licensing Information panel of the installation wizard, select the License File Location radio button and click Browse....

  5. Navigate to and select the saved license file on the Cisco Security Manager server file system and click Open.

  6. Click Next in order to continue with the Cisco Security Manager installation.

After Installation

Complete these steps:

  1. Save the attached license file (.lic) from the email to your file system.

  2. Copy the saved license file to a known location on the Cisco Security Manager server file system.

  3. Launch the Cisco Security Manager Client.

  4. Since a base license file has not been installed, the application runs in Evaluation Mode. After you supply the login credentials, you are prompted to either Continue Evaluation or Upgrade License. Click on Upgrade License.

  5. From the Install License dialog box, click on Browse.

  6. Navigate to and select the saved license file on the Cisco Security Manager server file system and click OK.

A Newer Cisco Security Manager Base License or An Incremental Device Count License

Complete these steps:

  1. Save the attached license file (.lic) from the email to your file system.

  2. Copy the saved license file to a known location on the Cisco Security Manager server file system.

  3. Launch the Cisco Security Manager Client.

  4. Choose Tools > Security Manager Administration.

  5. From the Cisco Security Manager - Administration window, click Licensing.

  6. Click Install a License.

  7. From the Install License dialog box, click Browse.

  8. Navigate to and select the saved license file on the Cisco Security Manager server file system and click OK.

  9. From the Install License dialog box, click on OK.

  10. Confirm the License Summary information displayed and click Close.

Note: You must store your license files on a disk that is local to your Cisco Security Manager server. Cisco Security Manager does not see mapped drives if you use it to browse directories on your server. Windows imposes this limitation, which serves to improve Cisco Security Manager performance and security.
