Problem Description

XENPAK-10GB-ER / XENPAK-10GB-ER=, manufacturing Part No. 800-24557-01, has been found to have a mechanical tolerance issue which may cause connector pin misalignment between the XENPAK and Catalyst 6500 line card/Catalyst 3750 switch when the XENPAK is installed in the line card/switch or removed from the line card/switch. This misalignment can short the connector pins, which may potentially cause the connector to fail, to melt, or to burn.  

Background

During internal testing, Cisco identified a mechanical tolerance issue with the XENPAK-10GB-ER, manufacturing Part No. 800-24557-01, which may cause connector pin misalignment between the XENPAK and the device it is installed in..  

Problem Symptoms

There are three main symptoms:

1. The misalignment can reset the Catalyst 6500 line card or the Catalyst 3750 switch upon insertion.

2. The misalignment can cause the pads on the XENPAK printed circuit board to disintegrate.

3. The misalignment can short the connector pins, which can potentially cause the connector to fail, to melt, or to burn during the insertion of the XENPAK into the line card/switch or removal of the XENPAK from the line card/switch. Some smoke may be emitted for a brief period, but this does not pose a fire hazard.
 

Workaround/Solution

There is no field workaround for this issue. Customers should replace the XENPAK-10GB-ER / XENPAK-10GB-ER=, manufacturing Part No. 800-24557-01. Please request a replacement by using the attached form.

When you receive the replacement XENPAK please follow the steps when replacing the Xenpak in your system:

When using the XENPAK with a Catalyst 6500:

1. Remove the line card from the switch without removing the affected XENPAK from the line card.

2. Remove the affected XENPAK from the line card.

3. Insert the new XENPAK in the line card.

4. Insert the line card in the switch.

5. Return the defective XENPAK to Cisco.

 

When using the XENPAK with a Catalyst 3750:

1. Save all your settings.

2. Power off the switch. If used in a Stack, the other switches in the stack do not need to be powered off.

3. Remove the affected XENPAK from the switch.

4. Insert the new XENPAK in the switch.

5. Power ON the switch.

6. Return the defective XENPAK to Cisco.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

The affected XENPAK can be identified either by Physical inspection or via Command Line Interface.

For physical identification of the affected XENPAK, please look for the Part No. 800-24557-01 printed on the back of the XENPAK as shown in the picture:

For returning the part you will need to provide the Serial No. of the XENPAK, which can be found on the back under the TOP Barcode. For example: In the picture below the S. No is INT0736004C






The affected XENPAK can also be identified using the Command Line Interface. The affected XENPAK has the following Vendor Part No. TXN174114015F06.
