Problem Description

Some CSS 11050 and 11150 that were reworked in order to replace units for Field Notice 25474, "Some Cisco 11050 and 11150 Content Services Switches Experiencing Latent Port Flapping and Redundancy Issues in the Field" escaped the appropriate rework procedure to fix the latent port flapping problem.

Background

Some CSS 11050 and 11150 units escaped the necessary rework procedure to fix the port flapping problem in the field. The version and revision on the hardware was upgraded, but the rework procedure did not happen in all cases. As a result, a few of these units were shipped to customers as replacements for the port flapping problem. Therefore, according to the previous Field Notice 25474, the units were labeled as having been fixed but could still experience the problem.

Problem Symptoms

CSS 11050 and CSS11150 units that show the version and revisions mentioned in the Products Affected section may not be free from the hardware defect that causes the system to port flap. See the Problem Symptoms section in the previous Field Notice 25474 for more details

Workaround/Solution

The Logistics Depots have been purged and the rework procedure has been properly implemented. All units in the depots as of March 25, 2004 are free from defect. If you have previously replaced a unit or units due to Field Notice 25474, Cisco is recommends that you replace any units that fall within the serial number range and have the versions and revisions listed in the Products Affected section. To determine the serial number, the version and the revision of the equipment see How To Identify Hardware Levels. Process a normal return materials authorization (RMA) with the following: Failure Code: Field Notice Alert

If you have not previosuly replaced a unit that falls within this serial number range and the version and revsion is less than that listed in the Products Affected section, then fill out the Upgrade Program form on the previous Field Notice 25474 to receive your replacement.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Visual inspection of the back of the unit will reveal two stickers. The small sticker in the center should be used, and compared to the second and third columns in the Products Affected section above.

fn29408_hltwyz-1.jpg

The center sticker includes the 800 level Top Assembly number with the version and revision. For example, a CSS-11052-AC with 800-09445-03 A0, would be Version -03, revsion A0. The example listed is in the serial number range and Version -03 Revision AO is earlier than Version -06 Revision A0 as listed in the Products Affected section for this product under Top Assembly. This means that this unit has not been reworked according to this field notice or the previous Field Notice 25474. For a CSS-11052-AC to be in the serial number range and not be affected it would be Top Assembly version -06 Revision B0 or later for example.

The sticker on the right could be used as well. The Hardware Major revision is listed on the sticker on the right in the "revision" section, which also includes the product serial number. The revision in the sticker on the right should be compared to the Hardware Revision in the right-most column above.
