Problem Description

The WS-X6148-GE-TX and WS-X6548-GE-TX cards could drop frames less than 64 bytes in size. The problem is specific to a batch of cards. The associated hardware version and serial numbers are mentioned in the Products Affected section above.

Background

Packets destined out of the WS-X6548-GE-TX or the WS-X6148-GE-TX that are less than 64 bytes will be dropped.

Possible Scenarios:

This can occur when a device forwards a packet that is 60 bytes and the 4 byte dot1q tag is added to create a valid 64 byte packet. When the tag is removed the packet is 60 bytes. If the destination is out a port on the WS-X6548-GE-TX or the WS-X6148-GE-TX, it will be dropped by the module.

Additionally, if packets are received on an interface that does not have a minimum Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) of 64 bytes, such as ATM or POS, and are destined out the WS-X6548-GE-TX or the WS-X6148-GE-TX, it will be dropped by the module.

This problem also manifests itself as WS-X6608-E1/T1 and WS-X6624-FXS blades not registering with the Cisco CallManager if the CallManager is connected to an affected module in the same chassis as the voice gateways.
 

Problem Symptoms

If you are experiencing packet loss on outgoing ports of the WS-X6548-GE-TX or the WS-X6148-GE-TX, execute the following commands, Native or Hybrid, to verify this condition:

Registers that we are concerned with are the egress length drop counters 00A6 & 00A7:
00A6: = 0000
00A7: = 0021
If the values are non-zero in either register, then packets have been dropped due to this problem.

The counters are cleared on read. This means, once you execute the command, the value of the counter is reset to zero.

For Voice Products:
When the CallManager is connected to an affected module, and a WS-X6608-E1/T1 or a WS-X6624-FXS module is in the same Catalyst 6000 chassis, the TFTP requests are either not received or have a destination address of all zero's, preventing the voice gateways from registering with the CallManager.
 

Workaround/Solution

A hardware modification has been implemented on these modules that eliminates the packet drop problem.

Affected WS-X6148-GE-TX Modules
For the WS-X6148-GE-TX, modules with hardware version 3.0 and below and with serial numbers in the range SAD071202RV through SAD073501BX are affected. Due to a documentation error, newer WS-X6148-GE-TX modules were inadvertently shipped with the hardware version set to 1.0 and 1.1. These cards are not affected by this field notice and do not need to be returned, as they do not fall into the affected serial number range.

Not Affected WS-X6148-GE-TX Modules
For the WS-X6148-GE-TX, modules manufactured with serial numbers greater than SAD073501BX do not exhibit this problem. This serial number range corresponds to Manufacturing Assembly Number 73-8670-03 and 73-8670-04, and hardware version 3.0 and above.


For the WS-X6548-GE-TX, modules with hardware version 4.0 and above will not exhibit this problem. This corresponds to modules with serial number greater than SAD074307H9. The documentation error exhibited on WS-X6148-GE-TX does not apply to WS-X6548-GE-TX. All modules manufactured with hardware version 4.0 and above do not exhibit the packet drop issue.

Confirm that the module is within the serial number range and hardware version that is specified above. If the product is within the serial number range but at a higher hardware version than specified above, it is not affected. Once the correct serial number and hardware version levels are confirmed, create an RMA to receive a replacement.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Use the command(s) below to confirm serial number, manufacturing assembly number, and hardware revision for the modules. Only modules within the serial number range and hardware version specified will require replacements.

For WS-X6148-GE-TX, RMA if all of the following conditions are met:

1. Serial number falls within range SAD071202RV to SAD073501BX.
2. Manufacturing Assembly Number is 73-8670-03 or 73-8670-04.
3. Hardware Revision is less than 3.0.


For WS-X6548-GE-TX, RMA if all of the following conditions are met:

1. Serial number falls within range SAD071500SN to SAD074307H9.
2. Manufacturing Assembly Number is 73-8216-02 or 73-8216-03 or 73-8216-04.
3. Hardware Revision is less than 4.0.

To identify the hardware version of your board, use the following commands:
