Cisco Catalyst 4000 K9 OS release 7.1(1)

Problem Description

Cisco Catalyst OS (CatOS) encrypted images for the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series, version 6.3(2) and later will not be able to load unless the installed ROMMON image is version 5.4(1) or later.

Background

These images require more than 4MB of random access memory (RAM) to load. ROMMON versions 5.4(1) and later free up the required additional RAM for software download.

Problem Symptoms

An attempt to upgrade a Cisco Catalyst 4000 switch to release 6.3(2) K9 will fail because of a lack of available RAM.

Workaround/Solution

Upgrade ROMMON to version 5.4(1) or later using the procedure outlined in the Cisco Catalyst 4000 6.3(x) Release Notes prior to upgrading the CatOS software to version 6.3(2) or later.

You can download ROMMON version 5.4(1) or later from the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Software Download (registered customers only) page.
