Cisco Unity

Field Notice: Cisco Unity Setup fails with Windows Installer failure code: 1603

November 12, 2001

Problem Description

The drivers for the dongle will not install correctly. This has happened on a new install on a Cisco provided Dell 1400SC, both a parallel port and a USB dongle exhibited the same problem. The problem has also happened on a new install on Cisco provided servers when the Recovery CDs were run on the new system.

Background

This problem will occur if you are installing Cisco Unity on a machine that was pre-installed in manufacturing, and you are installing Cisco Unity Setup Part 1 under an account other than the default account under which the OS was installed (Administrator in a workgroup). The reason is that the Sentinel Driver installed on the production images (version 5.3.9.2) is newer than the one that Cisco Unity setup installs (version. 5.3.9.0). You need to remove the currently installed Sentinel Driver and reinstall the Sentinel Driver included on Cisco Unity CD 1.

Problem Symptoms

Cannot install drivers for dongle successfully. Errors may be:

  • When running Cisco Unity setup Part I - "While trying to install the sentinel system driver, windows installer returned

  • When running the Sentinel security key setup separately from Cisco Unity CD 1 - "There is already a newer version of this driver installed"

Workaround/Solution

The workaround for this issue is to install the correct Sentinel Driver.

Step-by-step Instructions:

The Sentinel Driver installed on the production images (v 5.3.9.2) is newer than the one that Cisco Unity setup installs (v. 5.3.9.0). You must remove the currently installed Sentinel Driver and reinstall the Sentinel Driver included on Cisco Unity CD 1 to get around this problem. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Rename the Rainbow Technologies folder (in \Program Files by default)

  2. Remove HKLM | Software | Rainbow Technologies key from the registry

caution Caution:?Deleting the wrong registry key can cause the server to malfunction. Before you edit the registry, verify that you know how to restore it if a problem occurs. Note that a typical backup of the Cisco Unity server does not back up the registry. Refer to the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe for additional information. If you have any questions about changing this registry key setting, contact Cisco TAC.

  3. Reboot the server

  4. Install the Sentinel driver following the install guide (do this regardless of whether you are using a USB key or a parallel port key).

  5. Attach the key to the system.

After these steps Cisco Unity setup will run without problems.

This problem will be fixed in Cisco Unity 3.0(3)
