Resource Manager Essentials (RME) 3.1

Problem Description

In RME release 3.1, the image download to Cisco 3660 routers is limited to SIMM Flash because of a bug in the software management code, bug ID CSCdr10373, as well as a bug in Cisco IOS software, bug ID CSCdr42435. Please note that other software management features, such as image import from device, work as expected.

However, if the image download is attempted to PCMCIA Flash and if the destination Flash does not have enough space for the image, the destination Flash as well as the SIMM Flash may be erased. This is due to the Cisco IOS software bug mentioned above; the bug resides in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subsystem of the Cisco IOS software.

Even if sufficient space is available on the destination PCMCIA Flash, the boot configuration on the device may not be updated to reflect the new image. This is due to the software management code bug mentioned above.

This field notice references two Cisco bug IDs: CSCdr10373 and CSCdr42435. If you are a registered CCO user and you have logged in, you can view the bug details.

Problem Symptoms

Due to the bug in the Cisco IOS software, the following scenarios are possible:

  1. The device may not reboot if the destination external Flash and on-board Flash is erased and there is no other image available on any other external flash.

  2. The device may reboot, but with a different image. If the destination external Flash as well as on-board Flash are erased, and if a valid image is stored on any other external slot, the device will be rebooted with a valid image that resides on another external slot.

Due to the bug in the software managements code, the device may not reboot with the desired image.

Workaround/Solution

The on-board Flash (SIMM) should always be selected to download an image to a Cisco 3660 device.

The fix for this problem will be provided by the end of Q3CY00 or sooner pending a fix to the related Cisco IOS bug referenced above.
