Field Notice: Erroneous Messages Sent to MCP from CPU Every 49 Days, 17 Hours, and 3 Minutes

Problem Description

This rare problem (described in Cisco bug ID CSCdk32229) is found only on Catalyst 5xxx switches equipped with Supervisor IIIs (WS-X5530-E1 and WS-X5530-E2). The Supervisor III may reset a line card after 49 days, 17 hours, and 3 minutes of uptime, or can reset the supervisor module itself. The type of reset causes a card to come back on line in a "faulty" state. A manual line card reset is needed to resume normal operation.

Background

This problem was recognized because of the increased processor speed of the Supervisor III.

Problem Symptoms

When the system uptime of a Catalyst 5xxx switch reaches 49 days, 17 hours, and 3 minutes, a burst of control messages may be erroneously sent from the Network Management Processor (NMP) to the Master Control Processor (MCP) located on the Supervisory Module.

In chassis equipped with a Supervisory Module III, this may lead to unexpected resets of line cards, including ATM cards. Line cards may also change to a "faulty" state during normal operations. Another symptom that may be experienced is an "MCP exception" error, leading to a reset of the Supervisory Module III.

Workaround/Solution

This problem is fixed in Catalyst software releases 3.2(3) and 4.2(1). These versions of software can be downloaded from Cisco's web site at:

A workaround for customers prior to software releases 3.2(3) and 4.2(1) is to manually reset the switch once before the System Uptime reaches 49 days, 17 hours, and 3 minutes.
