Service provider (telco) networks are migrating from traditional hardware/appliance-centric deployments to cloud-based deployments, with software as the critical component of all network functionality(that is, software-defined networking [SDN] and network function virtualization [NFV]). For the past few years, most telcos have been doing some trials; most of these efforts have been focused on defining the architecture and technology with little emphasis on routine operations.
As service providers begin to transform their networks to embrace virtualization in the form of SDN and NFV, their network operations teams need to adopt IT’s DevOps practices to maximize the potential benefits of the evolving software-defined infrastructure. This includes adopting new tools that enhance agility, implementation of agile operational and organizational models and procedures, and in some cases adopting a new culture.
