Cisco SD-WAN powered by Viptela

Any user, any application, anywhere in the world. SD-WAN is a software-defined approach to managing the wide-area network, or WAN. Extend intent-based networking across the branch, WAN, and cloud.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – August 1, 2017, Cisco announced the close of its acquisition of Viptela, a privately held company based in San Jose, CA that delivers a cloud-first, software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) solution.

In June, Cisco announced it is rewriting the enterprise networking blueprint with a new generation of intent-based networking solutions. Viptela’s software-driven, cloud-first architecture for the WAN fits well with Cisco’s Digital Network Architecture (Cisco DNA) building on its automation, virtualization and analytics capabilities. Viptela’s offering complements Cisco’s on-premises routing platform with a cloud-centric approach to control management and orchestration, making it easy for our customers to deploy and manage the WAN. Viptela also supports Cisco’s strategic transition toward cloud and software-centric solutions that deliver predictable recurring revenue.

Cisco will commit significant engineering resources to bring next-generation SD-WAN solutions to market. For customers and partners that require pure play enterprise grade SD-WAN, cloud networking and WAN network-as-a-service functionality, Cisco’s SD-WAN solution based on Viptela will be the preferred solution.

Q: What is Cisco’s vision for a new network? What’s the future-state of the network do you envision?

A: We are unveiling the network of the future – a new, intuitive network that can learn, adapt and evolve. Powered by intent, and informed by context, this network gets more intuitive the more it is used. We have changed the network blueprint by rebuilding our hardware, from the ground up, and pairing it with the most advanced software. The result is a network that delivers:

  • Intent: Allows IT to move from manual operations to automating at scale, making it possible to manage millions of devices in minutes.
  • Context: Interpreting data in context is what enables the network to provide new insights, resulting in better security, more customized experiences and faster operations.
  • Intuition: The new network constantly learns and turns the vast volume of data in the network into actionable, predictive insights.

Q: How will Cisco integrate Viptela with its other SD-WAN offerings?

A: Cisco will commit significant engineering resources to bring next-generation SD-WAN solutions to market. To meet this goal, Cisco will use a phased approach over the next 12-24 months:

  • Phase 1: Cisco will continue to support and invest in the Viptela SD-WAN solution including the Viptela vEdge routers.
  • Phase 2: Viptela functionality will be incorporated into existing Cisco enterprise routing platforms.
  • Phase 3: Viptela’s cloud management platform will be integrated with Cisco DNA Center.
