SAN JOSE, Calif. – On August 8, 2019, Cisco completed the acquisition of Sentryo, a Lyon, France-based company that provides asset visibility and cybersecurity solutions for industrial control systems (ICS).
In January 2019, Cisco launched the industry’s first integrated network architecture that extends intent-based networking capabilities to the IoT edge to deliver unmatched scale, flexibility and security for IoT environments. With Sentryo technology, Cisco enhances security with unparalleled device visibility in OT environments. This provides control systems engineers deeper visibility into assets to simultaneously optimize and secure their industrial networks.
Q: Can you explain Sentryo’s offering?
A: Sentryo delivers an IoT technology solution that allows organizations to monitor and protect the sensitive devices operating within their SCADA and industrial control systems (ICS). Sentryo’s ICS CyberVision gives OT professionals complete visibility into their industrial networks to easily identify vulnerabilities, ensure equipment integrity, and collaborate with IT to fight cyber attacks. Gartner named Sentryo a 2018 Cool Vendor in industrial IoT and OT security for its notable approach to protecting converging IT/OT for critical infrastructure ecosystems.
Q: Why is now the right time to acquire Sentryo?
A: The Internet of Things delivers potential for increased operational productivity, deep intelligence, and additional revenue creation. Each company has its own IoT requirements and needs infrastructure that will grow and adapt with their business. Many IoT projects struggle because they cannot scale from pilot to production and are challenged to manage and secure their rapidly growing infrastructure. There are several dynamics at play:
The challenge to work among multiple vendors and products to get to a single solution creates complexity. Multiple unconnected networks hamper ability to grow and prevent organizations from deriving full benefits from IoT deployments.
Threat surfaces continue to expand leaving infrastructure vulnerable to attack. Lack of network and device-level visibility contribute to security challenges.
Many IoT processes from deployment to management to upgrades are still manual. Organizations operating industrial control systems lack the modern tools that exist in IT to rapidly deploy and manage networks due to siloed operations and disparate network infrastructures.

Q: Was Cisco previously working with Sentryo prior to the acquisition announcement and if so, in what capacity?
A: Yes. Sentryo and Cisco previously partnered to incorporate Sentryo’s Edge Sensor into Cisco industrial networking hardware with Cisco’s IOx application framework in order to bring ICS visibility to the IoT Edge and enable organizations secure their industrial infrastructure.
