Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire Sentryo

Enabling organizations to securely capture the benefits of IoT with visibility, scale and flexibility

Read announcement

SAN JOSE, Calif. – On June 6, 2019, Cisco announced its intent to acquire Sentryo, a Lyon, France-based Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) cybersecurity company that provides asset visibility and security solutions for industrial control systems (ICS) networks.

The Internet of Things delivers potential for increased operational productivity, deep intelligence, and additional revenue creation. Each company has its own IoT requirements and needs infrastructure that will grow and adapt with their business. Many IoT projects struggle because they cannot scale to production and organizations are challenged to manage and secure a rapidly growing infrastructure. The combination of Cisco network architecture and Sentryo capabilities will help companies capture IoT benefits, automate management of networks at scale, achieve new levels of flexibility, and better protect their assets and data.

In January 2019, Cisco launched the industry’s first integrated network architecture that extends intent-based networking capabilities to the IoT edge to deliver unmatched scale, flexibility and security for IoT environments. With Sentryo technology, Cisco enhances security with unparalleled device visibility in OT environments. This provides control systems engineers deeper visibility into assets to simultaneously optimize and secure their industrial networks.

Acquisitions continue to be a core part of our growth strategy and help Cisco accelerate the pace of innovation across our entire networking, security, and IoT portfolio.

Q: Can you explain Sentryo’s offering?
Sentryo delivers an IoT technology solution that allows organizations to monitor and protect the sensitive devices operating within their SCADA and industrial control systems (ICS). Sentryo's ICS CyberVision gives OT professionals complete visibility into their industrial networks to easily identify vulnerabilities, ensure equipment integrity, and collaborate with IT to fight cyber attacks. Gartner named Sentryo a 2018 Cool Vendor in industrial IoT and OT security for its notable approach to protecting converging IT/OT for critical infrastructure ecosystems.

Q: What product gaps did Cisco try to address with this acquisition?
Sentryo technology further strengthens our IoT network capabilities with device-level visibility and security capabilities.

Q: Was Cisco previously working with Sentryo prior to the acquisition announcement and if so, in what capacity?
A: Yes. Sentryo and Cisco previously partnered to incorporate Sentryo's Edge Sensor into Cisco industrial networking hardware with Cisco’s IOx application framework in order to bring ICS visibility to the IoT Edge and enable organizations secure their industrial infrastructure. (See a case study here.)

Q: How might this acquisition impact current Sentryo customers?
There will be no immediate change for Sentryo customers at announce. We look forward to integrating Sentryo capabilities into the Cisco IoT networking portfolio and offering our industrial customers rich functionality around ICS device-level visibility and anomaly detection.
