Cisco Completes Acquisition of July Systems, Inc.

Strengthening indoor location solutions

On August 1, 2018 Cisco completed the acquisition of July Systems, Inc., a privately-held company headquartered in Burlingame, CA with an office in Bangalore, India. The company delivers a highly scalable SaaS cloud-based middleware platform for location services. 

The location services market is rapidly growing as enterprises are realizing the benefits of indoor location services. Imagine that enterprises can connect, understand, and engage visitors in meaningful ways in their buildings; integrating this location services data to enable a truly integrated customer journey across the digital world and physical properties. The evolving indoor location technologies is making this vision a reality.

July Systems is an OEM partner of Cisco Systems and its solution has been branded Cisco CMX Engage. They provide an enterprise-grade platform for location services and engagement that provides instant customer activation, data-driven business insights, contextual business rules engine, and APIs. The solution is cloud-based and available through a subscription.

Q: Can you explain July Systems' offering?
A: July Systems is the OEM provider for Cisco CMX Engage. This solution functions as a platform layer and enables organizations to more effectively incorporate context as they engage their customers and employees. It ingests location data from CMX, customer visit history, and data that may be integrated through APIs to create a rules-driven engagement model. This data can then be exposed to third-party applications through APIs.

Q: Why did Cisco choose to acquire July Systems?
A: Cisco has worked with July Systems for several years. We have seen firsthand how their solution has evolved to its current capabilities. Our experience with the solution and its ability to provide context for location services has convinced us that now is the right time to make this acquisition. We also believe this is a fit with our intent-based networking strategy.

Q: Why is now the right time to acquire July Systems?
A: Cisco is seeing traction in the indoor location services market. We continue to see year-over-year increases in sales and Gartner recently introduced their first Magic Quadrant report for the solution category. As one of the pioneers and leaders in the field, we understand how important it is to continually evolve the solution. We continually hear from partners about the need for a platform approach. Given this interest, the increasing acceptance of indoor services and our OEM experience with July Systems, we are confident that now is the appropriate time to acquire the company.
