Joint Statement of Unified Communications Interoperability from Cisco and Microsoft

January 20, 2009

Updated July 15, 2011

Direct SIP Interoperability

Microsoft and Cisco jointly tested Direct SIP support between Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and version 7.1.3 and 8.0.1 of Cisco Unified Communications Manager. These are qualified interoperability scenarios supported by both Cisco and Microsoft.

Microsoft has tested and supports Direct SIP interoperability between Cisco Unified Communications Manager versions 4.x, 6.x, 7.x and 8.0.3 with Microsoft Lync Server 2010 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager 4.x and 5.x with Office Communications Server 2007 and Office Communications Server 2007 R2 as documented on the Microsoft Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program website.

Cisco has tested and supports Direct SIP interoperability between Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager versions 6.1 and 7.0. Microsoft has tested and supports Office Communications Server 2007 and Office Communications Server 2007 R2 with Cisco Unified Communications Manager version 6.1.

While Cisco offers and supports a SIP interface with Cisco Unified Communications Manager versions 4.x and 5.x, interoperability using this interface is only supported for systems that have been tested and documented on the Cisco Interoperability Portal. Cisco has not tested Direct SIP interoperability between Office Communications Server 2007, Office Communications Server 2007 R2, or Microsoft Lync Server 2010 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager versions 4.x and 5.x.

Microsoft and Cisco are currently testing Direct SIP support between Microsoft Lync Server 2010 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager version 8.5. When testing is validated (targeting Q3 CY2011), this will be a qualified interoperability scenario supported by both Cisco and Microsoft.

To facilitate interoperability support for our joint customers, both Cisco and Microsoft are members of TSANet, an independent third-party organization that helps coordinate multi-vendor support.

Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Office Communicator
Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Lync

Microsoft provides support for its published APIs for Microsoft Office Communications Server and Microsoft Lync to all its ISV partners. Cisco, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, used these published APIs to develop the "Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Office Communicator" and "Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Lync" products. Microsoft is pleased that Cisco has chosen to leverage Microsoft APIs to provide functionality for our mutual customers as an ISV.

Cisco, as the developer of the "Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Office Communicator" and "Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Lync", provides support for these products. Microsoft will provide ongoing support for the published APIs for Microsoft Office Communications Server and Microsoft Lync to our ISV's, including Cisco. Microsoft does not provide direct support for either Cisco product. The Microsoft UC platform will continue to evolve as the industry evolves and customer requirements change, and as with our broader ISV community, Microsoft is fully committed to working with Cisco so they can provide quality support for our mutual customers with future versions of Microsoft Lync.

As Microsoft's UC platform capabilities evolve, customer and ISV feedback is actively encouraged regarding UC platform evolution and announcing changes well in advance of shipping product. In doing so, Microsoft follows a consistent process that allows lead time for customers and ISVs to make required changes to their applications that rely on Microsoft software. In addition, Microsoft has specific technology adopter programs available for ISVs, including Cisco, where Microsoft provides support and roadmap information to help ISVs effectively build on the UC platform. As a result of these joint activities, Cisco's release of the "Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Lync" product supports both Microsoft Office Communicator and Microsoft Lync 2010.

Remote Call Control

Microsoft Live Communications Server 2005 SP1, Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Microsoft Lync Server 2010 offer an interface to third-party PBXs based on ECMA TR/87 called Remote Call Control. This capability allows Microsoft Office Communicator or Microsoft Lync 2010 to control a PBX station set and to have station set presence reflected in Office Communicator or Lync 2010. Microsoft generically supports the TR/87 interface, without requiring specific PBX vendor or version support.

Cisco supports Remote Call Control between Microsoft Live Communications Server 2005 and Office Communications Server 2007 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager versions 5.x, 6.x, 7.x and 8.x via Cisco Unified Presence 6.x, 7.0 and 8.x. Cisco supports Remote Call Control between Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager 7.1.3 and 8.x via Cisco Unified Presence 7.0.5 and 8.x. Cisco supports Remote Call Control between Lync Server 2010 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager 8.x via Cisco Unified Presence 8.5.2.

Remote Call Control is supported by Microsoft in Office Communications Server 2007, Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Lync Server 2010.

Video

Microsoft and Cisco provide standards-based video integration between the Microsoft Lync and Office Communications Server platforms and Cisco TelePresence H.323 and SIP environments.

Acting as a gateway, the Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server uses a native SIP trunk to Microsoft Lync and Microsoft Office Communications Server to provide connectivity to a wide range of standards-based video conferencing devices.

The Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server can be enhanced with the Cisco TelePresence Advanced Media Gateway which delivers bidirectional high-definition quality video with Microsoft Lync and Office Communicator 2007 R2 by transcoding Microsoft's Real Time Video (RTV) codec into H.264.

Cisco has tested and supports the following video interoperability:

  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server X4.2 and X5.2
  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server X4.2 and later
  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server X5.1.1 and later when including the Cisco TelePresence Advanced Media Gateway
  • Microsoft Lync Server and Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server x6.1 and later. When including the Cisco TelePresence Advanced Media Gateway, version 1.1 or later of the Cisco TelePresence Advanced Media Gateway is required.

Additionally, Cisco plans to qualify Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server and Cisco TelePresence Advanced Media Gateway as supporting the specific functionality included in the Microsoft video interoperability program. Qualification with both Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Microsoft Lync is planned.

Microsoft supports any client tested against Office Communications Server 2007 R2 connecting to Microsoft Lync with the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 level of functionality.
