The Web has emerged as one of the most powerful ways for businesses and consumers to communicate and learn. Its global reach, availability and speed have opened doors to areas of knowledge that, in the past, were obtainable only by a privileged few. Cisco CDNs take the Internet to the next generation by allowing all organizations to maximize the impact of communicating via the Web by overcoming the modern day bandwidth issues of delivering rich-media to the desktop. Cisco CDN guarantees that quality video, rich audio, and large graphics and other high bandwidth files can be delivered with speed, accuracy and consistency, dramatically increasing the impact of your communications programs. Customers see an immediate improvement in the performance, reliability and quality of a web site.

Learn more about the 5 CDN components and products, and how you can propel your business by leveraging the capabilities of the Internet by embracing Cisco Content Delivery Networks:

Content Distribution & Management
Provides provisioning tools to monitor edge devices, intelligently distribute content, allocate bandwidth, and more.

  • Content Distribution Manager Series offers efficient and flexible distribution of content and centralized management of entire Content Delivery Networks. The CDM ensures that content is distributed to the CEs at the edge and it manages the content routing policies, which find the closest copy of content for every incoming request. Based on Cisco's Application and Content Networking Software (ACNS) for enterprises or ICDN software for service provider deployments.

Content Routing
Redirects the user to the best site on the global network based on a set of metrics such as latency, topology, server load, and a set of policies such as location of content.

  • Cisco Content Router 4400 provides intelligent HTTP, DNS and WCCP redirects for global load balancing, best server selection, and high availability. Based on Cisco's ACNS or ICDN software for enterprise or service provider deployments.
  • Cisco Distributed Director 7200 provides dynamic, transparent, and scalable Internet traffic-load distribution between multiple geographically dispersed servers.

Content Switching
Intelligently load balances traffic across servers, firewalls, caches, and VPNs based on content requested, content availability, and current load. These Content Switching systems enable best use of available data center resources; support failsafe configurations; increase site and content security; and improve the end user experience.

  • Cisco CSS-11000 Series Switches provides a comprehensive set of Content Switching services (e.g.,) within a standalone, dedicated switching platform. There are three models of CSS 11000, ranging from an 8-port 10/100 fixed configuration to a modular, fully redundant, chassis-based system. Each model utilizes the same Content Switching software, allowing each model to provide for the same set of traffic management, resource management, security, administration features.
  • Cisco Catalyst 6000 Series Cisco's premier LAN switching system, offers two integrated Content Switching solutions. First, the Content Switching Module (CSM) -- a specialized combination of hardware and software -- provides for high performance, high availability, and advanced load balancing of servers, firewalls, and VPNs within a single slot of a Catalyst 6000 chassis. Second, IOS load balancing is a cost-effective software-based traffic management system that supplements the core LAN switching functions of the Catalysts 6000.
  • Cisco LocalDirector 400 Series is a cost-effective load balancing appliance that offers configuration flexibility and high availability.

Content Edge Delivery
Delivery of content from the closest server (Content Engine) to any requesting end user. Edge delivery guarantees the fastest possible serving of web pages. It minimizes WAN bandwidth consumption and improves the user experience.

  • Content Engine Series based on Cisco ACNS or Cisco ICDN software. Cisco ACNS combines caching and content delivery in one edge device. Uses Web Cache Control Protocol with Cisco IOS routers to transparently redirect Web traffic without requiring any changes to the existing network, client browsers or servers. Cisco ICDN delivers scalable, distributed, reverse proxy caching and Edge Delivery for HTTP, Real Networks, Windows Media and QuickTime content.

Intelligent Network Services
Intelligent Network Services in the IP infrastructure such as security, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks (VPNs), and multicast, all of which are required to build reliable and scalable CDNs.

  • NBAR on the Cisco 2600 and Cisco 3600 Series - provides intelligent network classification for Web-based applications and client/server applications and invokes specific services for those applications. Works with quality-of-service (QoS) features to guarantee bandwidth to critical applications, limit bandwidth to other applications, drop selective packets to avoid congestion, and mark packets appropriately for end-to-end QoS.
  • QoS: Type of service/differentiated service code point (ToS/DSCP) bits - allow differentiated network usage for business-critical applications based upon cache hits and misses, URL, file type, and domain by intelligently "coloring" packets with content-based information.
  • Source Specific Multicast & RTP - provide automatic stream prioritization in network routers, as well as fast startup without stream buffering for live and scheduled multicast events.
