Q & A

CiscoWorks VPN/Security Management Solution
Version 2.2

Background

Q. What is CiscoWorks VPN/Security Management Solution (VMS)?

A. CiscoWorks VMS is an integral part of the SAFE Blueprint from Cisco Systems®. It combines Web-based tools for the configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting of enterprise VPNs, firewalls, network-based intrusion detection systems (IDSs), and host-based intrusion prevention systems (IPSs). CiscoWorks VMS delivers the industry's first robust, scalable architecture and feature set that addresses the needs of small- and large-scale VPN and security deployments.

What's New

Q. What features are new in CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2?

A. In Version 2.2, each functional area of CiscoWorks VMS has been enhanced—firewall management, VPN management, IDS management, security monitoring, and operational management. The major enhancements include:

Q. How can I check for updates to CiscoWorks VMS?

A. Cisco periodically posts functional and maintenance updates to:

http://www.cisco.com/public/sw-center/sw-cw2000.shtml .

To download these update files, the customer must be registered on Cisco.com, which is included when you purchase a CiscoWorks VMS Software Application Support (SAS) contract. Access to CiscoWorks VMS files may also require you to submit pertinent company information to Cisco's online export authorization form. U.S. government regulations require export authorization in order to access and download any files containing 64-bit or higher encryption. When the customer is authorized, download access will be granted and future authorization will not be required.

Q. Does CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2 support Solaris?

A. CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2 supports Solaris for IDS management, security monitoring, auto-update server, firewall management, router VPN management, VPN monitoring, and operational management.

Q. What is the status of Cisco Secure Policy Manager?

A. Cisco Secure Policy Manager Version 3.1, which shipped with CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.1, was the last major release of Cisco Secure Policy Manager. Cisco Secure Policy Manager functions are being migrated to the firewall management portion of CiscoWorks VMS. Cisco Secure Policy Manager has been removed from CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2.

Ordering

Q. I have a 2.x version of CiscoWorks VMS. Do I get a free upgrade to CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2?

A. If you purchased a CiscoWorks VMS 2.x SAS contract, you can obtain CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2 at no additional charge. You can reference your contract number when you request minor updates at:
http://www.cisco.com/upgrade .

Q. Are there any cross-bundle discounts if I have other CiscoWorks bundles?

A. No. There is minimal functional overlap between CiscoWorks VMS and other CiscoWorks bundles.

Q. How can I get a free evaluation copy of CiscoWorks VMS?

A. You can order a 90-day evaluation copy from your Cisco sales representative.

Q. Where do I obtain part number and ordering information?

A. Ordering information is available in the CiscoWorks VMS product bulletin at:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/wr2k/vpmnso/prodlit/ .

Deployment

Q. Which management tools are recommended for small deployments?

A. The Cisco PIX Device Manager, IDS Device Manager, and Security Device Manager are embedded device managers that can configure and monitor on a single-device basis. These device managers are intended for smaller environments. CiscoWorks VMS can be used for environments that require more scalability.

Q. What are the recommended deployment guidelines for CiscoWorks VMS?

A. Please refer to the CiscoWorks VMS Deployment Guide at:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/wr2k/vpmnso/tech/ .

Licensing

Q. Are there any changes to the licensing?

A. Cisco has simplified the licensing on the restricted version of CiscoWorks VMS. The device restriction is 20 devices (firewalls, Cisco IOS routers, VPNs, and network-based IDSs) across all CiscoWorks VMS. An example would be five Cisco PIX firewalls, seven Cisco IOS routers, and eight IDSs. However, you may manage an unlimited number of Cisco security agents that are licensed and purchased separately.

Q. Is registration required?

A. CiscoWorks VMS Common Services installs a 90-day unrestricted license by default. Registration is required at Cisco.com to continue the use of the software beyond 90 days. Registration details are included with the licensed software kit.

Positioning

Q. What is the positioning with the CiscoWorks VMS Basic license?

A. CiscoWorks VMS Basic is bundled with select Cisco security devices. The CiscoWorks VMS Version 2.2 Basic license offers the same features as the Restricted license, except in the following areas:

For customers who need to manage 6 to 20 devices, the CiscoWorks VMS Restricted license is recommended. For customers who need to manage more than 20 devices, or need to install on Solaris, the VMS Unrestricted license is recommended.

Q. What is the positioning of CiscoWorks VMS with CiscoWorks Security Information Management Solution (SIMS)?

A. CiscoWorks SIMS provides monitoring of multivendor security devices and more in-depth monitoring features (trend analysis and asset scoring, for example). For more information, visit:
http://www.cisco.com/go/sims .

Migration Options for Customers of Older IDS Management Products

Q. Where can I get more information about migrating from Cisco Secure IDS Director and Cisco Secure Policy Manager to CiscoWorks VMS?

A. More information is available at:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/wr2k/vpmnso/prodlit/ .

For Cisco Secure IDS Director customers who prefer to stay on the Solaris platform, the CiscoWorks VMS Unrestricted license is the recommended option.
