The Service Management Solution (SMS), part of the CiscoWorks2000 family of products, provides a practical way to manage end-to-end SLAs between enterprises and internal or external service providers. SMS defines and monitors SLAs, specifying traffic type, endpoints, and thresholds against key parameters such as latency, packet loss, and jitter. SMS sets real-time traps allowing prompt detection and correction of possible service degradation. Open XML programming interfaces enable full management of service levels through easy integration with in-house or third-party analysis and provisioning systems. SMS comprises the Service Level Manager application, CiscoView, core CiscoWorks2000 framework and inventory subsystems, and one or more SLM Collection Managers (CM). SLM Collection Managers are distributable software agents providing job management and collection and aggregation of service level data generated by the Cisco IOS Software. The SMS bundle ships with an embedded CM as part of the Service Management Solution. Remote CMs are available, providing additional scalability, distribution, and resiliency.
