Remote access VPN’s utilize three connectivity techniques to the central site:

  • Software clients loaded on PCs or workstations
  • Hardware VPN routers
  • Firewalls and hardware clients.
Cisco Easy VPN is the perfect match for all three techniques.

Cisco Easy VPN
Cisco Easy VPN, a software enhancement for existing Cisco routers and security appliances, greatly simplifies VPN deployment for remote offices and teleworkers. Based on the Cisco Unified Client Framework, Cisco Easy VPN centralizes VPN management across all Cisco VPN devices thus reducing the complexity of VPN deployments. Cisco Easy VPN enables an integration of VPN remotes--Cisco routers, Cisco PIX Firewalls, the Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Client or software clients--within a single deployment with a consistent policy and key management method thus simplifying remote side administration.

Cisco Easy VPN consists of two components: Cisco Easy VPN Remote and Cisco Easy VPN Server. The Cisco Easy VPN Remote feature allows Cisco IOS routers, Cisco PIX Firewalls, Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Clients or software clients to act as remote VPN clients. As such, these devices can receive security policies from a Cisco Easy VPN Server, thus minimizing VPN configuration requirements at the remote location. This cost effective solution is ideal for remote offices with little IT support, or large CPE deployments where it is impractical to individually configure multiple remote devices. This feature makes VPN configuration as easy as entering a password, increasing productivity and lowering costs as the need for local IT support is minimized.

The Cisco Easy VPN Server allows Cisco IOS routers, Cisco PIX Firewalls, and Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrators to act as VPN head-end devices in site-to-site or remote-access VPNs, where the remote office devices are using the Cisco Easy VPN Remote feature. Using this feature, security policies defined at the head-end are pushed to the remote VPN device insuring those connections have up-to-date policies in place before the connection is established. In addition, a Cisco Easy-VPN-Server-enabled device can terminate VPN tunnels initiated by mobile remote workers running Cisco VPN client software on PCs. This flexibility makes it possible for mobile and remote workers, such as sales people on the road or teleworkers, to access their headquarters intranet where critical data and applications exist.

Cisco Easy VPN Remote is now available on Cisco 800, 1700, & UBR900 Series Routers, Cisco PIX 501 Firewalls and Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Clients. The Cisco Easy VPN Server is available on numerous Cisco VPN routers including Cisco 1700, 7100 and 7200 Series Routers with Cisco IOS Release 12.2(8)T, Cisco PIX Firewalls, and all Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrators. Please refer to the Cisco VPN Client data sheet for detailed information.

Cisco VPN Client
Simple to deploy and operate, the Cisco VPN Client enables customers to establish secure, end-to-end encrypted tunnels to any CIsco Easy VPN server. This thin design, IPSec implementation is available via Cisco.com for use with any Cisco central site remote access VPN product and is included free of charge with the Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator. The client can be pre-configured for mass deployments and initial logins require very little user intervention. VPN access policies and configurations are downloaded from the central gateway and pushed to the client when a connection is established, allowing simple deployment and management, as well as high scalability. The Cisco VPN Client provides support for Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Linux (Intel), Solaris (UltraSparc-32bit) and MAC OS X 10.1..

Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Client
Designed for organizations with many remote office environments, the Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Client combines the ease of use and high scalability features of a software client while providing the reliability and stability of a hardware platform. The 3002 client supports Easy VPN Remote, allowing it to connect to any Easy VPN server site concentrator. The VPN 3002 Hardware Client works with any operating system including Solaris, Mac and Linux.

The Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Client is a full-featured VPN client that supports 56-bit DES or 168-bit Triple DES (IPsec). Available in 2 modes--client and network extension mode--the VPN 3002 can be configured to either emulate the operation of the software client, or to establish a secure site-to-site connection with the central site device. Both modes use push policy and scale to very large numbers. The VPN 3002 is available with or without an 8 port switch and allows connections for hundreds of stations in a single network.

Wireless Client Support
With release 3.0, all Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrators support Elliptic Curve Cryptography or ECC. This is a new Diffie-Hellman Group which allows for much faster processing of keying information by devices with limited processing power such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and Smart Phones. Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrators can now securely terminate tunnels from IP-enabled wireless devices, allowing a whole new class of users to securely access enterprise information while preserving the investment in VPN termination equipment in the enterprise data center. All Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrators will ship with an evaluation copy of Certicom Corp.’s movianVPN client, an ECC-compliant VPN client for IP-enabled wireless devices.

Cisco Internet Mobile Office
The Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Client, the Cisco VPN Client, and the Cisco Internet Mobile Office work together to provide mobile professionals with high-speed, secure broadband access to their networks in airports, hotels and other public spaces.
