Cisco Firewall Services Module (FWSM) for the Catalyst 6500 Series Switch is ideal for the edge, both for data centers and extranets, distribution layers to define server traffic policies, and network management layers. The Cisco Catalyst 6500 is the IP services switch of choice for customers who require intelligent services such as firewall capability, intrusion detection, and virtual private networking, along with multilayer LAN, WAN, and MAN switching capabilities.

The Cisco FWSM is the industry's highest-performance firewall solution, providing 5 GB of throughput per module and scaling to 20GB of bandwidth with multiple modules. The FWSM is completely VLAN aware, offers dynamic routing, and is fully integrated within the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches. The FWSM is based on Cisco PIXŽ Firewall technology, and therefore offers the same security and reliability as the award-winning Cisco PIXŽ family of security appliances. Based on network processor technology, which allows for feature enhancements via software download, the FWSM offers the most flexibility to adapt to future customer needs and features.

Ease of use - FWSM Uses Cisco's proven and familiar Cisco PIX management interface that keeps the security and networking management interfaces separate. The FWSM is supported by the Cisco management framework and by Cisco AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data) partners for configuration and monitoring.
