Cisco ONS 15252
Release 1.0.1Introduction
Cisco is proud to announce orderability of Cisco ONS 15252 multichannel wavelength system Release 1.0.1. The ONS 15252 multi-channel wavelength system delivers wavelength services for OC3/STM1, OC12/STM4, OC48/STM16, POS, and Gigabit Ethernet.
Figure 1 Cisco ONS 15252 Multi-Channel Wavelength System
The Cisco ONS 15200 metro DWDM solution supercharges wavelength services and provides radical economics for service providers. The ONS 15200 delivers instant wavelength services to the customer premise or between carrier PoPs, interoperates seamlessly with the industry-leading Cisco ONS 15454 and ONS 15327 metro optical transport platforms, and offers the highest service density and lowest cost per wavelength. The ONS 15200 is scalable in single wavelength increments, aggregates wavelengths, and provides metro and regional-metro ring, star and point-to-point networks.
Specifically, Release 1.0.1 of the Cisco ONS 15252 provides NEBS3 compliance. This further strengthens the product's market position by introducing carrier-class environmental robustness and performance, a quality standard required by major ILECs and many US carriers. NEBS3 compliance for the Cisco ONS 15252 has been achieved by introducing the following new system components:
•
New 1 rack unit (RU) fan tray with LEDs and alarm outputs for use with the Cisco ONS 15252.
•
New network adaptation modules (NAMs) made of aluminum.
•
New shelf mechanics with a baffle to guide air flow.

Cisco ONS 15252 Ordering Information
Cisco ONS 15252 products may be ordered through the Cisco Networking Products Marketplace online order entry tool. The new version of the CCO configuration tool based on the new Assemble To Order (ATO) structure, makes ordering easier and provides greater flexibility in ordering different product configurations. When ordering ONS 15252 products, customers will be asked if the MetroPlanner network design tool (version 1.1) was used to ensure that customers receive properly configured systems (ie. an accurate bill of materials [BOM]).
MetroPlanner Network Design Tool
New and improved ONS 15200 network design and ordering processes have been implemented in Release 1.1 of the MetroPlanner design tool and the Cisco Connection Online (CCO). Customers should contact their local account team to learn more about the MetroPlanner design tool and to develop a service plan and wavelength strategy that will meet their current or future Metro DWDM needs.
New MetroPlanner design tool process is as follows:
1.
Cisco engineers help design the customer's Cisco ONS 15200 network using the MetroPlanner design tool.
2.
MetroPlanner optimizes and analyzes the proposed design.
3.
Cisco engineers add customer specific order information and save the network design.
4.
Cisco engineers create a BOM (bill of materials), save the BOM as a text file, and email/fax the BOM to customers.
5.
Customers use the BOM to enter the order into the updated CCO ordering tool.
Cisco has improved the MetroPlanner design tool and aligned the BOM output with the CCO ONS 15200 ordering tool option classes, which simplifies and standardizes CCO online order entry. The new MetroPlanner design tool provides the following enhanced functionality from a portable, GUI-based application:
•
Networks can be specified at the requirements level
•
Drag and drop components into the design
•
Smart entry-only valid choices can be made
•
Automatic design and optimization of the network
•
Clear "Go/No-Go" analysis
•
Quick shelf layout and BOM generation
•
Optical channel margin analysis
•
Receiver overload analysis
•
Coherent and non-coherent cross-talk penalty determination
•
Dispersion penalty analysis
•
Wavelength allocation
•
Optical protection scheme validation
•
Automated generation of OSA results
How have the MetroPlanner configuration models to CCO been improved?
•
All CCO option classes have been sorted to match chassis slots to simplify equipment option selections.
•
Site specification and equipment configuration information can now be added to the shipping label.
•
Ensures proper equipment handling at customer receiving docks.
•
A unique identifier now ensures that designs are easily tracked and archived.
•
MetroPlanner BOM output and CCO order input now line up.
Common Language Equipment Identifier (CLEI) Code Product Information
The product names and new common language equipment identifier (CLEI) codes for the Cisco ONS 15252 and ONS 15201 products can be accessed via the Cisco online CLEI Code Tool http://tools.cisco.com/emco/pcnclei/prsc.
End of Sale (EOS)/End of Life (EOL) for Release 1.0 ONS 15252 Assemble to Order (ATO) Part Names
ONS 15252 Release 1.0.1 provides a new shelf configuration and new network adaptation modules (NAMs). The Release 1.0 Cisco ONS 15252 products listed in the table below will no longer be available for sale or shipped as of the following dates:
•
Final Orderability Date: Oct. 26, 2001
•
Last Shipment Date: Dec. 1, 2001 (est.)
Note the following interoperability limitations between EOL'd and new Cisco ONS 15252 products:
•
The new fan unit cannot be placed together with the existing shelf mechanics. This configuration would render the product to be neither NEBS2 nor NEBS3 compliant.
•
For the same reason, the existing NAMs cannot be used as spare parts for the new shelf. Customers are strongly advised not to use existing inventory NAM boards as spares for ONS 15252 Rel. 1.0.1.
•
New NAM boards could however be used as spares for existing shelves.
•
A complete upgrade of existing shelves to NEBS3 requires not only the fan unit, but also new shelf mechanics and new NAMs. This upgrade cannot be performed in-service and is not recommended.
