Cisco IOS Upgrade
Ordering InstructionsUpdated January 10,
2001
1. What is an Upgrade?
An upgrade is an order placed for a Cisco IOS® feature set that contains more functionality than the one that you are replacing. It is not an "update." An update consists of installing a more recent version of the SAME feature set.
Exception: If a feature set has been obsoleted, the next, closest feature set, on a more recent release, will be considered an update.
2. Ordering an Upgrade
Orders can be placed by calling your local Cisco representative at 1-800-553-NETS for assistance, or by ordering online at: http://www.cisco.com/public/Ordering_root.shtml.Additional information on online ordering is available at: http://www.cisco.com/public/ordering_info.shtml
Use this table to follow the examples outlined below:
Example 1: A Simple Upgrade Order
To order an upgrade, please use the product numbers beginning with "FL". These product numbers, known as Feature Licenses, enable your order to be processed as an upgrade and not as a more expensive new-system purchase.Ordering Example
•
You are running the IP feature set (S25C-12.0.1) in a Cisco 2500 series router
•
You want to upgrade to IP PLUS (S25CP-12.0.1)
Use FL25-P= to order (see the price list for all available product numbers)
Example 2: A Complex Upgrade Order
More than one Feature License may be required in ordering an upgrade.Ordering Example
•
You want to upgrade from the IP feature set (S25C-12.0.1) running in a Cisco 2500
•
You want to upgrade to the IP/IPX/AT/DEC PLUS (S25BP-12.0.1) feature set
You must use two Feature Licenses:
•
One to upgrade from IP to IP/IPX/AT/DEC (FL25-C-B=)
•
One to add the PLUS (FL25-P=)
Note:
When upgrading from a non-enryption feature set to a feature set with encryption, please ensure that the FLxx-P= Feature License is included with your upgrade order. (The `xx' stands for the platform.) All encryption feature sets include the Plus set of features.
Receiving the Software
After ordering the upgrade, customers with active SmartNet support contracts can then proceed to CCO to download the required software. For downloading instructions, please see Downloading Software from CCO, below.Alternately, a copy of the software, on physical media (diskette, flash card, etc.) can be shipped. Please see Ordering Software on Media section for ordering instructions.
3. Ordering Software on Physical Media
This is the typical way to order upgrades if customer does NOT hold an active SMARTnet support contract. Also, this is the way for SMARTnet contract holders to receive their new software on physical media. To order Cisco IOS software on physical media identify the desired feature set and order the product which ends with a "=". The "=" in the product number designates it as a spare. Continuing with the example above, if you order S25BP-12.0.1=, no feature licenses are necessary because, beginning 11/22/2000, the price of the feature license is included in the spare price of the physical media.
Exception 1: International customers ordering software upgrades that include 56-bit, IPsec, or triple DES encryption technology.
When placing orders for software on physical media to be shipped internationally, please use the feature set product number beginning with an `I' instead of the spare product number (beginning with an `S' and ending with `='). Please refer to the Cisco price list for all `I' product numbers. (The `I' stands for international.) Example of an international product number is: I25CHL-12.0.3T
(Feature Sets containing 40-bit encryption technology are no longer export controlled and can be ordered as any other feature set.)
Ordering Example
•
You currently have IP PLUS in a Cisco 2510 on IOS Release 12.0(1) and want to upgrade to IP PLUS IPSEC 3DES.
If you want your upgrade shipped domestically, order: S25CK2-12.0.1= (the spare for the IP PLUS IPSEC 3DES feature set on diskette)
If you want your upgrade shipped internationally, order: I25CK2-12.0.1 (the international product number for the IP PLUS IPSEC 3DES feature set on diskette)
In summary, use the feature licenses to add features to currently installed Cisco IOS software and use the spare product numbers (product number beginning with "S" and ending with "=") or international product numbers to obtain a copy of the software on physical media.
