Cisco IOS Software Release Process for Release 11.1 CT

Introduction

This product bulletin describes the process used to deliver Cisco IOS Early Deployment (ED) 11.1CT software for the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7500 series routers. Use this bulletin in conjunction with Product Bulletin #537, Cisco IOS Software Release Process and Cisco IOS Software Release Process for 11.1CC.

Summary

The objective of the release of IOS software version 11.1CT is to incorporate Tag Switching on the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7500/RSP 7000 series routers. Cisco IOS Release 11.1CT should only be used by those customers who wish to run Tag Switching in their networks. Release 11.1CT was developed to consolidate the following key development efforts into a single, stable and fully supported release:

Tag Distribution Protocol (TDP)

Dynamic Tag Switching

Tag Switch Path Tunnels (TSP Tunnels)

Traffic Engineering

Static Tag Switching

Ships in the Night

Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CT will receive regular maintenance like all other Major Releases. Interim releases may be made available on a weekly basis. For further information see below. Note that 11.1CT will be a limited life release, with regular maintenance and support only available until the introduction of a future mainline IOS release (targeted for CQ4 1998). At which time all customers running 11.1CT will be required to upgrade to that release for regular maintenance and support.

Product Numbers To Order

Cisco IOS Release 11.1CT will be available only on Cisco Connection Online (CCO) Cisco IOS 11.1 Software Upgrade Planner.Orders cannot be placed when ordering systems or spares. Customer's using IOS release 11.1CT for Tag Switching support must purchase an Interdomain Routing Feature License for each router running Tag Switching.

Life Span

Release 11.1CT is a limited life release. Release 11.1CT will be maintained until a feature-equivalent, future mainline IOS Release is available (targeted for CQ4 1998). Release 11.1CT will continue to be supported and continue to be maintained until further notice. Future Product Bulletins will be issued for further information.

Support

Release 11.1CT supports the policy listed in Cisco Systems Product Support Policy publication. Release 11.1CT will be a limited life release, with regular maintenance and support only available until the a feature equivalent future release is available.

Documentation

The Release note is updated for every maintenance release and exists on Cisco Connection Online (CCO - registered users only) Cisco IOS 11.1CT Release Notes. New features or products introduced in Release 11.1CT typically have Feature Modules. Feature Modules consist of a brief overview of the feature, benefits, configuration task and a command reference.

Supported Feature/Products

Cisco is introducing a new ED IOS release to support TAG Switching on the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7500 (including Cisco 7000 with RSP7000) series routers. Release 11.1CT supported feature sets included all hardware and software feature of Cisco IOS Release 11.1, 11.1CA and 11.1CC. For a description of the new features see Product Bulletin #757 Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CT New Features or Cisco IOS 11.1CT Release Notes.

Release Structure

Cisco IOS Release 11.1CT receives regular maintenance and interims like all other major releases. Release 11.1CT release structure is as listed below:

Figure 1

11.1CT Parents Release

11.1CT is based on release 11.1, and is parented directly from Release 11.1CC ED release. There is a week delay between each sync down to the each release.

Maintenance Release

As maintenance is performed on Release 11.1, each sync down to the ED releases takes one week. Release 11.1CT will be built with a 3 week delay from 11.1 mainline. For every 11.1 maintenance release, there is an 11.1CA, 11.1CC and 11.1CT maintenance release, which contains all defect corrections delivered on Release 11.1, in addition to maintenance or new functionality unique to Release 11.1CA and/or 11.1CC.

Maintenance Release 11.1(18) and 11.1(18)CA will switch from a 7 week maintenance cycle to a 14 week maintenance cycle. Cisco has implemented a maintenance release process that will allow Release 11.1 and 11.1CA to use a 14 week maintenance cycle but allow Release 11.1CC and 11.1CT to maintain the 7 week maintenance cycle. The 14 week maintenance cycle odd number releases will not be made available (see Figure 2) but will post all even number maintenance releases. Release 11.1CC and 11.1CT will post a maintenance release every 7 weeks.

Figure 2

Interims

There might be situations in which a customer needs a specific software defect correction prior to a fully regression tested maintenance release availability. Release 11.1CT will provide interim builds to Cisco's Technical Assistance Center (TAC), which normally provides interim builds to customers on a case-by-case basis when there is an urgent need to correct a bug.

The 11.1CC has a maintenance release every 7 weeks with interim builds in between. The first interim is built 2 weeks after the maintenance release, the second interim is built 3 weeks later and the next maintenance is built 2 weeks later. 11.1CT release will synch to all the CC interim and maintenance builds. Diatonically, the 11.1CT release may provide weekly interim builds. 11.1CT interim builds that are in between those of 11.1CC release will be numbered 11.1(X.Y)CT1, and 11.1(X.Y)CT2 (see Table 2). All 11.1CT interim builds named 11.1(X.Y)CT1 or 11.1(X.Y)CT2 are not synch to the 11.1CC release. These interims builds are a vehicle to provide TAG Switching specific fixes to customers whenever needed.

Table 2  The summary of the naming convention is as follows:

11.1(X)CT - Maintenance Release

11.1(X.0)CT1 - as-needed weekly interim not synced

11.1(X.1)CT - Synced Interim build

11.1(X.1)CT1 - as-needed weekly interim not synced

11.1(X.1)CT2 - as-needed weekly interim

11.1(X.2)CT - Synced Interim Build

11.1(X.2)CT1 - as-needed weekly interim not synced

11.1(Z)CT - Next Maintenance Release

Cisco highly recommends that you use a maintenance releases to solve software defects. If you must use an interim build, Cisco recommends to use the second interim build and migrated to the next maintenance release as soon as it is available.
