Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway

Q. What is the difference between the Cisco® VG200, VG 224 and VG248 analog phone gateways?

A. The Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway is based on the same technology used to build Cisco IOS® Software. As a result, the Cisco VG 224 gateway delivers comparable quality of service (QoS) features to those found in Cisco IOS Software, and also enables the high-density capabilities of RJ-21 interfaces. The development of telephony features in the Cisco VG 224 gateway is currently underway and the following table details the immediate differences between the Cisco VG200, VG 224, the next VG 224 Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) software release, and the VG248 gateways in a Cisco CallManager analog gateway deployment scenario:

A. The Cisco VG 224 gateway is an analog line side gateway that connects to a Cisco access router running SRST. Therefore, the Cisco VG 224 gateway is not required to support SRST.

Q. Does the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway work with Cisco CallManager Express?

A. Yes, the Cisco VG 224 gateway is a supported endpoint with Cisco CallManager Express. The Cisco VG 224 gateway communicates with Cisco CallManager Express using H.323 or Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Additional supplementary features are also available via script software download onto this product.

Q. Are there plans to offer Simplified Message Desk Interface (SMDI) support on the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway?

A. SMDI software support is on a future roadmap. Customers who need an SMDI interface should use the Cisco VG248 48-Port Analog Phone Gateway.

Q. What voltage does the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway use to light message waiting indicators (MWIs)?

A. The Cisco VG 224 gateway uses FSK to light MWIs.

Q. What is the device type of the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway in Cisco CallManager?

A. The Cisco VG 224 gateway is a Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) or Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) device.

Q. Can I use Cisco SoftPhone with an analog phone connected through a Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway?

A. No, the Cisco VG 224 gateway will only support MGCP and SIP endpoints at the first customer ship (FCS) date.

Q. Why does the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway not support SCCP?

A. Cisco SCCP support with the Cisco VG 224 gateway is expected to be available in the middle of 2005.

Q. What codecs are supported by the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway?

A. G.711 and G.729a

Q. Is there a backup power supply or backup Ethernet connection?

A. Yes, the Cisco VG 224 gateway offers both a backup power supply through APC ( http://www.apc.com)—a Cisco partner—and the Cisco VG 224 gateway has two 10/100BASE-T ports for dual homing configuration.

Q. What Cisco IOS Software version will be supported on the Cisco VG 224 Analog Phone Gateway as of the FCS date?
