John Chambers and King Abdullah at Cisco Systems San Jose Headquarters

On Monday, June 5, 2000 His Majesty King Abudllah of Jordan visited Cisco Systems for a morning of meetings. King Abdullah participated in a private meeting with Cisco Systems President and CEO John Chambers and then joined a roundtable discussion with high-level Silicon Valley Executives and the City of San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales.

Some of the issues that were discussed with King Abdullah were the power of Internet, the importance of education, how IT can improve the Jordanian economy, and the importance of deregulation and competition. Some of King Abdullah’s goals in his trip the U.S. were to promote and encourage economic reform for Jordan by focusing on trade, investment and free movement of capital, continuing to privatize government-owned companies, and continuing his efforts in building a strong IT infrastructure.

King Abdullah is the eldest son of the late King Hussein. King Hussein passed away on February 6, 1999 and King Abdullah assumed the crown on February 7, 1999. King Abdullah is married to Queen Rania and they have two young children.

On his trip to the United States King Abdullah also visited New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and met with President Bill Clinton in Washington D.C.
