FACTS AND STATS OF THE WEEK: Internet Use Around the World

EUROPE LOGS ON - According to a study by AOL Europe and Roper Starch Worldwide published in May 2001, 36% of online consumers in Germany, France and the United Kingdom began using the internet in the last year. One-fifth of all users went online from home for the first time in the last six months. 54% said they have made a purchase online, and 43% do so regularly or occasionally. 27% of European users bank online, compared to just 14% of US users.

GROWTH FOR CHINESE IP TELEPHONY - A Frost & Sullivan report predicts that by 2006, Internet protocol (IP) telephony revenues in China will reach $2.8 billion. With $87.4 million in 2000 revenues, the market will have to grow at a 79% compound annual growth rate to meet the forecast. Frost & Sullivan also expects China’s voice-over-IP (VoIP) traffic to grow at a 90% compound annual clip between 2000 and 2006. In 2001, traffic is projected to rise fivefold to 9.8 billion minutes.

WE BUILT THIS CITY ON BROADBAND - US home broadband access was up 134% between April 2000 and April 2001, from 6.8 million users to 16 million. According to Nielsen//NetRatings, the top five metropolitan areas in terms of cable modem, digital subscriber line (DSL), integrated services digital network (ISDN) and local area network (LAN) access account for more than 30% of all users in the country. 10.2% of users live in New York City, 5.9% in Los Angeles, 5.8% in San Francisco, 4.7% in Boston and 3.6% in Seattle.

ASIA PACIFIC TO TOP US IN WEB USAGE - International Data Corp. (IDC) projects internet usage in the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) will increase at a 30% compound annual growth rate between 2001 and 2005. Although the total number of users is expected to exceed 240 million in 2005 -- topping the total for the US -- only 9% of the region’s population will be online. Also by that year, 72% of all Asia Pacific internet users will come from China, Korea and India.

URBAN USAGE RATES IN LATIN AMERICA ON THE RISE - Ipsos Reid's "Face of the Web" study reports that the number of people who used the internet (in a past 30-day period) in 'Urban Mexico' increased from 27% in 1999 to 33% in 2000. The percentage in 'Urban Brazil' increased

slightly from 21% to 22%, in 'Urban Colombia' from 14% to 17% and in 'Urban Argentina' from 13% to 20%.

3G mobile services could change my mind, and the minds of many others. http://www.nua.ie/surveys/analysis/weekly_editorial.html

COMPUTER USER: SLOW SITES COSTING ONLINE RETAILERS - Slow-loading websites are causing online consumers to abandon up to 50 percent of online transactions, or USD25 billion worth of purchases. http://www.nua.ie/surveys/index.cgi?f=VS&art_id=905356735&rel=true
