Field Notice:
Port Adapter Compatibility for Cisco 7200 VXR Routers

Document ID: 15794

Updated April 11, 2005
February 23, 1999

Products Affected

The release of the new Cisco 7200 VXR router requires certain port adapter updates for forward compatibility. This requirement is due to the new and higher speed Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) midplane in the Cisco 7200 VXR router. Only port adapters used in Cisco 7200 VXR routers require this update. Since all port adapters are not upgradeable, some port adapters are not supported in Cisco 7200 VXR routers. Only port adapters addressed in this Field Notice are affected. All other port adapters are not affected and are compatible with Cisco 7200 and 7200 VXR routers unless previously documented as not supported in the 7200 router. Those port adapters will not be supported in the Cisco 7200 VXR router. See details below. Cisco 7200 routers are not affected by this change.

Problem Description

Some port adapters currently used in Cisco 7200 routers will not function in Cisco 7200 VXR routers due to the new and higher speed PCI midplane unless the port adapter arbiter erasable programmable logic device (EPLD) has been upgraded. The arbiter EPLD change is necessary for correct operation and forward compatibility with Cisco 7200 VXR routers. The down-version port adapters will not be recognized, will fail diagnostics, and will not pass traffic. Not all affected port adapters are upgradeable, therefore some are not supported in the Cisco 7200 VXR routers. In addition, all other port adapters not addressed in this Field Notice are compatible with the Cisco 7200 and 7200 VXR routers and require no action or upgrade unless previously documented as not supported in the Cisco 7200 router platform. Those port adapters will not be supported in the Cisco 7200 VXR routers (please read the details below). Backward compatibility with Cisco 7200 routers is maintained. There is no risk to customers who have Cisco 7200 routers.

Problem Symptoms

When port adapters without the arbiter EPLD upgrade are installed in a system with a Cisco 7200 VXR router, they will not operate properly. The down-version port adapters will not be recognized, will fail diagnostics, and will not pass traffic. There is no risk to customers who have Cisco 7200 routers.

The following is an example of a port adapter error message that requires a minimum hardware level in a Cisco 7200 VXR router:

%PA-3-REVNOTSUPPORTED: PA in slot2 (Ethernet) requires base h/w revision of (1.14) for this chassis

The following is an example of the error message of a port adapter that is not supported with a Cisco 7200 VXR router:
Example for a PA-2CT1/PRI:

00:00:28: %OIR-6-INSCARD: Card inserted in slot 1, interfaces administratively shut down
00:00:29: %PA-3-NOTSUPPORTED: PA in slot1 (Channelized T1) is not supported on this chassis
00:00:29: %PA-3-DEACTIVATED: port adapter in bay [1] powered off.
00:00:29: %PA-2-PABRIDGE: Failed to config bridge for PA 1

Example for a PA-F/FD-MM:

00:01:37: %OIR-6-INSCARD: Card inserted in slot 3, interfaces administratively shut down
00:01:38: %PA-3-NOTSUPPORTED: PA in slot3 (FD FDDI DAS (Multimode), PA-F/FD-MM) is not supported on this chassis
00:01:38: %PA-3-DEACTIVATED: port adapter in bay [3] powered off.
00:01:38: %PA-2-PABRIDGE: Failed to config bridge for PA 3

The show diag command will show that the port adapters are disabled. The following are two examples of this.

Background

When port adapters without the arbiter EPLD upgrade are installed in a Cisco 7200 VXR router they will not operate properly. The down-version port adapters will not be recognized, will fail diagnostics, and will not pass traffic. Not all port adapters are upgradeable or supported in the Cisco 7200 VXR router.

The Cisco 7200 VXR routers support all port adapters supported on the Cisco 7200, except for following:

FDDI Port Adapters:
PA-F-MM
PA-F-SM
PA-F/FD-MM
PA-F/FD-SM

Token Ring Interface:
PA-4R
PA-4R-FDX

Channelized T1/E1 Port Adapters:
PA-2CT1/PRI
PA-2CE1/PRI-75
PA-2CE1/PRI-120

Channelized DS3 Port Adapter:
PA-CT3/4T1 (dual wide)

Compression Hardware Accelerator:
SA-COMP/1
SA-COMP/4

The following port adapters are supported with Cisco 7200 VXR routers and require the minimum hardware revision listed below:

PA-8E, Rev. 1.14
PA-4E, Rev. 1.14
PA-5EFL, Rev. 1.5
PA-8T-V35, Rev. 1.13
PA-8T-232, Rev. 1.4
PA-8T-X21, Rev. 1.13
PA-1H, Rev. 1.17
PA-2H, Rev. 1.3
PA-A3-T3, Rev. 2.0
PA-A3-E3, Rev. 2.0
PA-A3-OC3 MM, Rev. 2.0
PA-A3-OC3 SMI, Rev. 2.0
PA-A3-OC3 SML, Rev. 2.0

All other port adapters not listed are compatible with Cisco 7200 and 7200 VXR routers unless previously documented as not supported in the Cisco 7200 router. Those port adapters will not be supported in the Cisco 7200 VXR router.

There is no risk to customers who have Cisco 7200 routers (non-VXR routers).

Workaround/Solution

There is no risk or exposure to the installed base of Cisco 7200 routers or to new 7200 routers. This change pertains only to Cisco 7200 VXR routers with NPE-100, 150, 200, or 300. New Cisco 7200 VXR routers will be shipping with the required port adapter revision. However, previously purchased port adapter spares may not be at the required revision.

Advanced replacement: For planning purposes, assume shipment lead times consistent with new versions of the applicable port adapters when placing your order. Down Revision port adapters must be returned to a Cisco-designated location within 60 days of shipment to the customer of the replacement port adapters. Failure to return the used port adapters within 60 days will result in a billing from Cisco to the reseller or end user for the full purchase price less applicable discount of the equivalent new product.
