Problem Description

The T1/E1 Network Modules for the 3600 need to be upgraded in order to be used with the digital modem network modules (NM-6DM, NM-12DM, NM-18DM, NM-24DM, NM-30DM). If you do not plan to use the T1/E1 network module with digital modems, this upgrade is not necessary. If you use a T1/E1 Network Module that has not been upgraded in a Cisco 3600 system with digital modems, you will get an error message when the router boots similar to this:

The T1 or E1 network module in slot 0 is incompatible with the digital modems installed in the router.

Workaround/Solution

The revisions of the network modules with the fix are listed in Table 1. You can examine the network module revision on the network module itself, or via the Cisco IOS show diag command.

Table 1. Network Module Revisions

The following is an example of the show diag command issued on a 3640 with a NM-1CT1-CSU in slot 3. This network module needs to be upgraded in order to support digital modems:

The part number needs to be upgraded to 800-01228-03 in order to support digital modems.

Request an upgrade to your T1/E1 network modules, use the CCO upgrade agent. If you do not have access to the upgrade agent, please send an email to upgrades-info@cisco.com with the following information:
