Products Affected
BPX Switches operating with Switch Software Versions 8.4.15 or 8.4.16.
Problem Description
The network event messages are no longer sent to the Network Management Station HP Openview® Event Browser. The lack of these messages seriously hinders the Network Operators from quickly finding problems in the WAN Switch network.

Problem Symptoms
The only symptom is that no events are logged against the StrataCom Events HP Openview® Event Browser.
Solution
Switch Software Versions 8.4.09, 8.4.10, 8.4.11, and 8.4.12 send trap messages normally to the HP Openview® Event Browser. Additionally, Switch Software Version 8.4.17 will have the fix for the Event Browser problem.
Workaround
Network monitoring can be accomplished using two methods:
-
Attaching a printer to any node's Auxiliary Port and configure the port for "Okidata 182 Printer with Log".
-
Visually monitor a terminal screen connected via the Control Port, Telnet, or StrataView Plus Node Administration window to any node in the network. Issue the dspnds command to see which nodes are in alarm, then "VT" to the node and view the alarms (dspalms) and the event log (dsplog). This method is more cumbersome than method 1.
Note:?Methods 1 and 2 above can be used at the same time.
To configure the alarm printer method, as described in method 1, issue the command cnftermfunc a 2. Below is the response screen that displays after issuing this command:

This Command: cnftermfunc
Select Control port (c) or Auxiliary port (a):
MAJOR ALARM
The Auxiliary Port is an RS-232 serial port; consequently, the printer should also have an RS-232 serial port. Use the cnfterm a command to set up the Auxiliary Port baud rate, stop bits, and handshaking, then configure the printer appropriately.
Recommendation
Networks already operating with Switch Software Versions 8.4.15 and 8.4.16 should use method 1 or 2, or both, as described in the Workaround section until Switch Software Version 8.4.17 or later is available. Customers who need to upgrade to a Version of 8.4 should wait for the availability of Switch Software Version 8.4.17 or later.
