Products Affected
Products Affected MDS NX-OS - 4.1MDS NX-OS - 4.2(1b) MDS SAN OS - 3.3(4)
Problem Description
Executing any of the following commands on a MDS switch or collecting the same information via Fabric Manager may cause a kernel panic on the supervisor:
Version Offending Commands 3.3(4) show hardware internal mgmt0 stats
show hardware internal eobc stats
show tech-support
show tech-support details
tac-pac
4.1(x)
4.2(2) or below
show hardware internal mgmt0 stats
show hardware internal eobc stats
show tech-support
show tech-support details
tac-pac
show tech-support ha
show tech-support sysmgr
This issue is only applicable to switches with Supervisor 2 in MDS9506, MDS9509 or MDS9513 chassis. In a dual supervisor switch this will force a supervisor switchover. In single supervisor systems the switch will reload.
Issuing the commands in succession on a dual supervisor switch will cause a switch reload if the command is executed the second time before it is in a ha-standby state.
Background
The kernel panic is caused by running either of the following statistics commands:
show hardware internal mgmt0 stats
show hardware internal eobc stats
This issue only affects removable supervisor 2 modules.
Problem Symptoms
In a dual supervisor switch this will force a supervisor switchover. In single supervisor systems the switch will reload.
Workaround/Solution
Refrain from using "show hardware internal mgmt0 stats" and "show hardware internal eobc stats".
Before running "show tech-support", "show tech-support details" or "tacpac" (from FM/DM or CLI), load a plugin (available at www.cisco.com) which will patch the offending commands. The plug-in should be loaded on the standby supervisor also. The plug-in is not persistent across switchovers and should be loaded any time a switchover occurs.
Upgrade to one of the following software releases when it becomes available.
3.3(4a) or above
4.2(3) or above
Using the Debug Plug-in
Commands to issue are in italics.
- Download the plug in from the Cisco Software Download Center: http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/Redirect.x?mdfid=282764109 and select release "1.0"
- Make a copy of the downloaded gplug
copy bootflash:m9500-sup2-showtech-FN63288-plugin-1.0.bin bootflash:gplug_copy
- Copy the copy of the gplug to standby supervisor as well
copy bootflash:gplug_copy bootflash://sup-remote/
- Load the gplug on active supervisor
load bootflash:gplug_copy
- Attach to standby supervisor
attach module <standby-sup-slot>
- Load gplug on standby supervisor
load bootflash:gplug_copy
