Products Affected MCS7828-H3
Problem Description
Certain Seagate hard drive models used in HP servers (listed in the Products Affected section of this document) that are configured with firmware versions prior to HPG6 might experience drive failure indications.
Failures might occur when the disk drives appear to be idle or when online and active.
Any hard drive listed in the Products Affected section abovewith a firmware version prior to HPG6 must be upgraded to HPG6 or later to avoid service impacting problems.
Background
This problem affects only certain Seagate hard drives listed in the Products Affected section above and is documented in HP Advisory number c01612429.
Problem Symptoms
Applications might experience a loss of service as a result of the hard drive errors.
The drive might display a solid amber LED, but upon a removal and re-seat of the hard drive or a server reboot, the drive might function normally for an undetermined amount of time before exhibiting the problem symptoms again.
Workaround/Solution
DO NOT implement the solution documented in the HP Advisory on MCS branded servers. Use only the steps and utility documented in this notice.
The solution to this problem is to apply a hard drive firmware update to the affected hard drives.
Replacement of affected hard drives is not necessary and should not be requested.
This issue is resolved with firmware update CD version 2.3. The ISO image for this firmware update (named 7828h3-hddfwupdate-v11.iso) can be downloaded from the following location: MCS-7828-H3 Utilities Downloads (Registered Users Only)
The Readme is located here: MCS-7828-H3 Firmware Update Readme
Follow the instructions in the Readme to apply the hard drive firmware update.
Important Notes:
- Make sure to perform a backup before attempting the hard drive firmware update.
- Check any spare drives and upgrade them accordingly.
